The purpose of the following thesis has been to study librarians' attitudes towards comics for grown up people. I have compared the attitudes among the staff in two public libraries in Sweden, Malmö public library and Lund public library. I have conducted five interviews with librarians and observed how the comics are handled in each library. I have also carried out a literary study of the history and theories of comics. Initially a definition of comics is presented, and then an overview of the development of comics and of some theories regarding them is offered. This is followed by a brief review of comics in Swedish public libraries. In the concluding discussion I present an explanation of how librarians attitudes towards comics are reflected in each of the two libraries in the exposure, budget and acquisition of comics. Furthermore, I question the extent of the knowledge about literary theories concerning comics which librarians posses. The conclusion is that the librarians in Malmö and Lund have a positive attitude towards comics for adults, but there is, especially in Lund, a lack a profounder knowledge about them and the literary theories connected to them. I recommend that if libraries want to see departments for comics that are functioning well, it is necessary to engage librarians with a special interest in comics.
