This is a 20 points graduation thesis, performed at the Department of Urban and Rural Development at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala. The main aim of this thesis is to examine what it is like to combine studying with working and starting your own company. Furthermore, I want to be able to convey this knowledge to others. An important part of being a landscape architect is informing people, and making rather abstract issues tangible. The word 'entrepreneur' is originally French. Today, we think of entrepreneurs, or contractors, as energetic people, who dare to try new ideas. There are many reasons why people start their own company, but the most common ones are the wish to fulfil oneself and to be able to plan one's own time.

In today?s hectic society more and more people experience stress and our lifestyle gives us a very limited chance to recover. For some it sometimes goes that far that they get burnt-out, they have pushed themselves to the ultimate limit. There are different methods and treatments to recover but one very efficient treatment is to spend time in a rehabilitation garden. There the patients get treated by therapeutics that uses the garden as the main tool.The fact that gardens and parks have a positive effect on humans have been used by people for a long time but it?s not until recently that the research has taken speed.

Taking a qualitative approach, this research investigates different theories and methods for creating parks that people will cherish and visit during their daily life. It also takes on the task to understand how principles of developing recreational values in a small forest is affected by the addition of a new element to the landscape, i.e. a major highway. Data was collected through the combination of focused literature review and study trips. This provided a framework which in turn was applied to the subject of the study, i.e.

The purpose of this work is to raise ideas and interest for land that is very much forgotten,unused and neglected in terms of maintenance and usability. Railroads are often seen as adirty and loud intrusion in the landscape and therefore cities turn their backs on them. Theland around railroads is not considered useful despite its often central location and scrublandis common in these areas.The starting point of this work is the restrictions and possibilities linked to the land withinthe security distance 30 meters from the railroad center. Within this security distance thereare numerous limitations and regulations due to the nature of railroad use. These limitationsare counted for in the initial chapter and lay the foundation for the rest of the work.

Stressrelaterade sjukdomar och utbrändhet blir allt vanligare i takt med att pressen på arbetsplatsen ökar. Detta är ett samhällsproblem som inte bara drabbar individerna oerhört negativt, det skapar även stora problem för företagen med ökat antal sjukskrivningar och kostar samtidigt samhället stora summor pengar varje år. Samtidigt finns forskning som tyder på att grönska och natur har mycket positiva effekter på mänskliga stressnivåer. Denna kandidatuppsats ämnar att genom en litteraturstudie behandla och diskutera huruvida en grönare arbetsplats kan minska den stress som idag drabbar allt fler. Den ämnar också undersöka hur en grön stressdämpande miljö bör se ut och vad den innehåller.

This thesis has been carried out at the Department of Urban and Rural Development at SLU Ultuna during the spring semester 2009. The topic of the paper is how energy consumption can be influenced through design and if the conditions for good design decreases when solutions based on energy efficiency are used. The report is divided into one literature study and one part where energy efficient solutions are used in a design. The thesis work has its origin in a project called "Energihus i Uppsala." The planned building will be a center for energy research in Uppsala. The project aims to demonstrate to the public what is currently happening in research related to energy.

Landskapsarkitekten kan bli en ännu viktigare aktör när det gäller att kontrollera materialflöden i samband med olika projekt. Material utvinns, bearbetas, distribueras, används och förbrukas i en allt större omfattning och hastighet vilket har lett till störningar på såväl lokal som global nivå. I denna studie har landskapsarkitektens roll och verksamhet med avseende på hållbarhet undersökts utifrån återanvändning och återvinning av byggmaterial. Studien är ett försök att problematisera begreppen återanvändning och återvinning av byggmaterial när de aktualiseras inom landskapsarkitekturens verksamhetsfält. I examensarbetet presenteras åtta fallstudier vilka bygger på intervjuer som gjorts med praktiserande landskapsarkitekter och andra aktörer inom anläggningsbranschen. Studien har i första hand varit inriktad mot projekt där det funnits en uttalad intention att återanvända och återvinna byggmaterial.

While studying at the landscape architect program in Uppsala I found stress to play a major roll in the education. To help myself and others to handle the negative stress within the profession and the education I choose to write my thesis about landscape architects' work cultures. Swedish Association of Architects is in second place in the SACO study on long-term sickness for fatigue syndrome, stress and depression. The issue needed to be addressed. My purpose with the thesis has been to study the work cultures in the landscape profession and training and to study and find ways to manage negative stress in the profession and in education.

In this project, an area in the small town Tungelsta south of Stockholm, is in focus. Tungelsta is placed in the municipality of Haninge and it is for the planning department on the municipality, this project is made. The task is to compose an arrengement of buildings and open spaces for a 50 hektar area. Today the area is consists of agriculture fields and forests. The area is placed near the railway station, in the city centre of Tungelsta, which makes it interesting and important to work with. There are different opinions about the future plans for the area.

Dead wood is important for many species. The amount of coarse dead wood (diameter >10 cm) is much lower in managed forest than in unmanaged forests. Stumps constitute the largest proportion of the volume of coarse dead wood in managed forests. The aim of our master thesis is first and foremost to win the competition One Prize - mowing to Growing: Reinventing the American Lawn, announced in USA by the organization Terreform 1, the first of December 2009. Apart from winning the competition we have also tried to reach a deeper understanding of food production today and its future possibilities. Our ambition to present a winning design proposal has to a large extent decided the structure of the entire thesis. Our completed and submitted design proposal - growforgold.org - is a way of addressing urban food production in a creative way, keeping the sovereignty of the individual in mind. Instead of presenting a place-specific design solution our proposal aims to create incentives and possibilities for urban farming to take place anywhere and anytime. Our submission to the competition represents both a tool and a platform which, put in practice, could make landscape architecture happen through the hands of the individual.

Landskaparkitekturen kan beskrivas som ett brett och tvärvetenskapligt område. Det går dock ändå att tala om specifika landskapsarkitektoniska förhållningssätt, något som formuleras inom utbildningarna, olika debattforum, genom facklitteratur, facktidskrifter och genom praktiken självt. Någonstans börjar och slutar landskapsarkitektonisk kunskap. Någonstans börjar och slutar det landskapsarkitektoniska fältet. Hur beskrivs då landskapsarkitektens kontext i ett urval samtida arkitekturperiodika? I denna uppsats har ett antal artiklar publicerade mellan 2008 och 2011 analyserats. Beskrivningarna av landskapsarkitektens kontext i artiklarna har sedan fördjupats och breddats med hjälp av fyra teoretiska perspektiv.
