"...men en berusad kvinna är värre!" En studie om arbetslivets attityder kring mäns och kvinnors missbruk utifrån ett genusperspektiv

Working life is an arena that often reflects attitudes that already exist in our society. When alcohol- and drug abuse is detected among employees the employer has a statutory responsibility for rehabilitation. But the way how these employees gets to be treated is also influenced by attitudes. The purpose of this essay was to illustrate from a gender perspective how women's and men's alcohol- and drug abuse occur in working life and how the attitudes in our society towards their abuse reflect on trade life. Referring that, our intention was also to examine which consequences are given of how the individual is treated. To obtain the purpose of this essay our main questions were:How does women's and men's alcohol- and drug abuse occur at companies and which attitudes towards their abuse can be found among employers and employees?Which differences can be found, in which rehabilitation employers offer women and men with alcohol- and drug abuse? Our empirical material consists of interviews with eleven representatives from trade unions, company provided healthcare services, national organisations and treatment centres. The results of this study showed on differences in occasions of gender regarding acceptans and bringing disgrace upon an employee with alcohol- and drug abuse in working life. Women's abuse were more taboo than men's, and women more often hid their abuse, which could lead to consequences. When the abuse got detected gender differences also existed concerning which treatment that was offered. We used theories with aspects of shame and gendercontract in order to increase the understanding of these phenomena.
