Olika men ändå lika

funktionshindrade ungdomars syn på sig själva och sitt handikapp

This is an essay about how disabled young people look upon themselves and their handicap. The purpose of the essay was to illustrate how the identy and self-image of young disabled persons is formed during their youth, and also how they experience their handicap during this time in life when you compare yourself with friends and other significant persons. My questions were:1. In what ways is the identity and self-image affected by being handicapped?2. Which experiencies do handicapped young people have when it comes to how other people treats them?3. Does it make a difference if you have visible or concealed handicapp? The essay is based on five qualitative interviews with two boys and three girls in the ages 18-28, when it's their perspective I wanted. I have my theoretical starting point in Goffman's, Davis' and Goldberg's theories and concepts. The result showed that to live with a handicap indeed can form one's identity and self-image, when you as a child already have been exposed to the societies prejudices and lack of knowledge. Each individual is different and their personality and even their daily mood affects how they think and respond to being handicapped.
