Klassifikation eller indexering av samlingarna på en arkitekthögskola?


This thesis analyses the problem of how to organise a multidisciplinary domain of knowledge like architecture. The study is both theoretical and empirical. The theoretical part include discussions of theories of knowledge organisation. Two different principles of classification were examined in relation to the domain itself, as well as in relation to the educational programme at the School of Architecture at Lund University and comparable schools in Sweden. The empirical part is a case study carried out at the School of Architecture at Lund University. A selected number of books with different contents within the domain of architecture were classified for the purpose of comparing enumerative classification systems (SAB and UDC) with synthetic systems (Colon and Bliss Classification). These classifications were then the objects of interviews with different representatives of the academic staff at the School of Architecture. It turned out that a fundamental problem linked to the different schemes of classifications is that technique and art are organised in separate classes, whereas they very often are integrated parts of architecture. The conclusion in this respect is, however, that the synthetic principle is more suitable for the domain of architecture, but not completely satisfying. The main results of my analysis is that knowledge organisation based on the use of a thesaurus constructed for the domain, like Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT), is to be preferred.
