In this Master's thesis we investigate the collection management regarding fiction for adults. The apprehension of fiction has changed over the years. From the beginning it was considered to be mostly educational rather than being the purpose of entertainment. As for today these views are not opposites to each other. Regarding this we discuss the problem concerning terms of quality. The purpose of the study is to illustrate the processes of collection management of the public libraries today. We do so by comparing lists of acquisitions from the year 2002 and by emphasizing our results through interviews with librarians who work with these matters. What differences are there between the main library and the branch libraries when it comes to collection management? What do these differences consist of? How does one determine what the user wants and needs? Are the apprehended needs related to the actual needs? Our results indicate that the fields of responsibility are different within the examined libraries. The main library takes care of debutants and exclusive literature while the branch libraries focus on books in demand. This has to do with economic resources available; but also with the different areas the libraries serve.
