A company library can only exist if it contributes to a positive result for the company. As endusers are beginning to perform searches on the Internet and have access to databases and electronic documents via their desktops it becomes important for company librarians to thoroughly think through what services should be offered to the users so that the library still contributes to the company s profit. The aim of this dissertation was to try to define the services that the company library offers its users having in mind the changes that have taken place concerning the availability of information. I also wanted to explore whether the librarians had the necessary competence to perform the services offered. Six information specialists were interviewed to give their view on the services their libraries offered. The interviewees were chosen for leading progressive company libraries where they had already thought about what services should be offered and why. Two end-users were also interviewed. The result shows that there are three discernible directions for the services of the company library. One direction is doing work which will facilitate for the end-user to perform his or her searches such as designing the intranet and educate users in information retrieval The second direction concerns rather the opposite. Instead of taking a step back the information specialists work actively with providing information to the users, giving it to them even before they have been asking for it. The third direction is about working with the users in teams or on special projects. There is a possibility that the company library thus can become a more active partner in the overall strategic information management. However, to be able to do this it is important that the value of the company library is understood in the organization. From the point of view of the company it is no end in itself to have a library.
