In this thesis we have tried to show the problems that the categorisation of ?norrlänningar? generates. We have also tried to describe what the stereotypes of ?norrlänningar? are by examining what people say on web logs. The method we have used to find the stereotypes in our empirical material is the discourse analyse. Our starting point has been a critical perspective on the power relations that we believe are the source to the often-negative opinions about ?norrlänningar?. Despite that ?norrlänningar? is a very heterogeneous group with very different conditions of life, people use the category without reflecting and tend to see ?norrlänningar? as one of a kind. Our opinion is that there really is no reason for using the category, especially when the use of it can result in negative consequences. The stereotypes of ?norrlänningar? strengthen and consolidate the gap that exist between ?norrlänningar? and the rest of Sweden. The stereotypes that we have found of ?norrlänningar? are the native, the taciturn, the lazy and ineffective and the coarse and heavy driner. All these stereotypes have in common that they in some way relate to the concept ?uncivilised?.
