Bibliotek och skola i samverkan i kampen mot läs- och skrivsvårigheter

The main purpose of this study is to investigate in what ways librarians and schoolteachers can co-operate and combine their professional skills in order to help and motivate children with reading and writing disabilities, and how audio books can be useful in this work. The main source of information is interviews with teachers from ten schools in the province of Scania, southern Sweden. Those teachers, their schools and their local libraries all took part in a project spanning from 1993 to 1996, aiming at increasing the use of audio books in combination with the corresponding printed versions in work regarding the here addressed problem. This study was made with a qualitative empirical method supported by a normative theory belonging to the new institutional theory school. There are no statistical conclusions in the report. Literature referred to in this report concerns dyslexia and different reading stimulating projects in which teachers and librarians have been working together in their fight against dyslexia. Reading skills are very important to the individual. Today, in Sweden, it is nearly impossible to find employment if you do not master the language in writing. Since 1990, dyslexia is officially recognized as a handicap. This entitles persons with dyslexia to receive help and support. The use of audio books is one of the means. Many reports show that audio books are unsurpassed in stimulating children suffering from reading disabilities to read books. The experience of actually reading leads to better selfconfidence, which in turn makes them want to read more. The main conclusions of this study are: " Audio books used in combination with printed books are very useful in helping and motivating children with reading disabilities. " Reading stimulating projects in which librarians and schoolteachers collaborate significantly increase reading ability. " It is desirable that means of co-operation between libraries and schools are institutionalized.
