I am a practising classical soprano. After more than 20 years of professional singing, I re-trained my voice according to principles of the old Italian school of singing. In this essay, I examine the origins and priciples of bel canto, with special focus on appoggio and chiaroscuro, two key ingredients in the bel cantao tradition. I explore the relationship between science and the craft of singing, and what modern voice science has to say about the efficiency and health aspects of this technique, I also describe the profound effect it has had on me as an artist..

There are different ways of developing a second language. The purpose of this qualitative study is to investigate whether and possibly how music, focused on singing, can improve the development of Swedish as a second language. Through interviews with three vocal teachers, from three different schools in Sweden, and observations of one of the vocal teachers, information about how they work and think about the subject has been collected. The vocal teachers teach groups of second language learners by singing songs made especially for second language learning. The vocal teachers consider singing beneficial in the development of the pronunciation and improvement of the prosody, which affects the students? capacity to sound like a native Swedish speaker.

I oktober 2006 presenterade jag för Utbildnings- och kulturförvaltningen i Markaryd idén att samla sångintresserade i Markaryds kommun till en projektkör för att uppföra ett större körverk med orkester. Målen med projektet var att stimulera till ökad sång- och körverksamhet i skola och kommun och genom denna aktivitet, dels skapa närkontakt med klassisk musik, dels att bygga broar mellan olika grupperingar i kommunen. Då man år 2007 firade Markaryds kommun 700 år, Markaryds kyrka 150 år och Linné 300 år tillkom aspekten att projektkören skulle kunna bidra med en konsert som avslutning på jubileumsåret. Min forskningsfråga i detta arbete är: På vilket eller vilka sätt har projektets målsättningar uppnåtts? Skriftliga utvärderingar med de deltagande körsångarna, reaktioner från kommunen, press och allmänheten samt en DVD dokumentation utav konserten ligger till grund för min resultatdiskussion.

Title: Alexander Technique - Different thoughts on the Alexander Technique and its effect on the singing voice. Does singing lessons cause tension in the student? What should you as a teacher consider to avoid situations that cause tension? This examination is based on interviews. The persons who have been interviewed are singing students, singing teachers and teachers in the Alexander Technique. The literature and the interviews describe the Alexander Technique as a method that, with support of a teacher of the Alexander Technique, helps you to recreate the balance between the cranium, neck and spine.

Individual lessons in singing and different instruments are a big part of music education. The teacher and the pupil are meeting each other face-to-face in this kind of lessons. The interaction between these two individuals, in singing lessons, is the main subject of this thesis. The purpose of this Masters thesis is to examine the representation of student life in Uppsala in the 1860s and 1870s in memoirs. This purpose is achieved by contextualising the memoirs in two different analyses. In the first, the representation of student life in the memoirs is compared to that in another literary genre, the university novel, and it is found that the two representational forms paint completely contradictory pictures, where in the novels the higher education is depicted as rotten and in dire need of reformation, whereas in the memoirs the system, albeit somewhat flawed, works. The memoirs and the novels thus seem to be competing systems of representation, created in different discourses, wherein the purpose and nature of higher education widely differed. In the second analysis, the examination of the memoirs is based on research concerning the nation building process in Sweden during the 19th century.

Since my experience is that teachers in singing hardly ever talk about when to sing a tone, I have chosen to examine this fact through interviews and earlier research in this matter. The interviewed singing teachers belong to different genres (classical music, pop/rock, jazz and folk music). I asked them to share their thoughts about the word timing, when it comes to music. I also wanted to know if they have any methods when it comes to teaching students to improve their timing. Further on, I have been discussing the results and the literature in order to make clear in what way singing teachers give priority to when a tone is being sung.

Scatsång och röstimprovisation är speciella kännetecken som skiljer jazzsång från andra sångstilar. Men det betyder inte att alla jazzsångare gillar att sjunga scatsång eller göra ordlösa improvisationer med sin röst. Vilka tankar finns hos jazzsångare om scatsång och röstimprovisation? Det är en fråga som har inspirerat mig till att göra denna studie. Syftet med denna studie är alltså att undersöka hur scatsången och röstimprovisation uppfattas av erfarna jazzsångare idag.

Elever i musikklasser med ko?rinriktning i grundskolan inga?r i en lokalt situerad musikkultur som a?r formad av traditioner med ro?tter i fo?rra seklets fo?rsta ha?lft. I denna tradition har konventioner om sa?ng med barn utvecklats. Undervisning i musikklasser sker i stora grupper men den enskilda eleven internaliserar kunskapen om att sjunga individuellt.

Title: "Oh how brightly May-sun shines?". I have chosen to write about culture differences in music. My purpose with this study is to unite two music cultures into one piece of art. Through my story and film you can see my attempt to teach a men's choir two songs in ten rehearsals.

The singing-voice ? Differences and similarities between male and female singing-voices in a pedagogical perspectiveThe primary purpose of the present study is to create a basis for a deeper understanding of the male singing-voice. Within the above purpose the present study also aims at comparing differences and similarities between the male and the female singing-voice, and examining possible pedagogical differences in teaching male and female singing students.The study is partly a literature study where existing studies in the field of the singing-voice are examined, in which the male singing-voice is described in relation to the female one. The study also comprises an interview study where four professional singing-teachers, two male and two female, are being interviewed according to an interview guide (see appendix A) focusing on pedagogical aspects of the male and the female singing-voice.The results of the study show that the anatomical functions of the singing-voice are the same whether you are male or female. This also holds true for the basic singing-technique which is the same for both sexes.

Scientific studies show that good leadership is a key factor for group- and individual development. Studies have also shown that the contrary can curb talented individuals and/or cause stagnation, or even cause groups to halt their progression. This essay studies how leaders in musical and athletic environments look on their own leadership. In interviews, the leaders reflect upon experienced issues related to their profession, their views on difficulties in their leading role, as well as individual, and group development. This study also includes two observations, one in each field of profession.
