Upplevelser på Visitor Centers

En konceptutveckling av utställningen på Visitor Centre i världsarvet Gammelstads kyrkstad


Visitor Centers were first established at various national parks in North America. Most Visitor Centers were built in the ten-year period following 1952. The purpose of the Visitor Centers was to welcome visitors and enhance their experience of the national parks. Today there are Visitor Centers all around the world, connected to different places or attractions. Many of the Visitor Centers that exist today, especially those in the national parks in North America, were built during the information society. Today we are in an experience society and people's needs have changed and people are now looking for experiences. For Visitor Centers to be successful in the new experience society they must be further developed and adapted to the new conditions of the experience society. Now Visitor Centers must focus on experiences rather than information. In this paper I studied one of the Visitor Centers located in Sweden: The Visitor Centre in the World Heritage site of Gammelstad church town. The purpose of this paper is to examine how Visitor Centre in Gammelstad can be adapted to the new demands of the experience society. To achieve this I conducted a qualitative interview with a descriptive approach and a literature review with a positivist approach. The interview and the literature review were then used as the basis for a concept developed for the Visitor Centre in Gammelstad. The concept that was developed is a checklist that can be used specifically to adapt the exhibition in the Visitor Centre in Gammelstad to the demands of the experience society. The checklist consists of a number of interpretation theories, and a theory about how people seek different experiences depending on what stage of life they are in and a list of the ten principles of design a producer can use to create the conditions for a memorable experience.
