The aim of the study was to explore how persons with aphasiaexperience literacy and reading and writing. Seven persons with mild-moderateaphasia were interviewed. The interviews were recorded, transcribed andanalysed using qualitative content analysis. The analysis resulted in three mainthemes; A changed reading, A changed writing and How to adjust andaccommodate to new conditions. The most apparent aspect was that theinformants experienced that literacy had changed, regarding what and how theyread/write. Today the informants? frequency of reading and writing hasdecreased and the text is shorter and less complicated. The informants handledthe changed literacy in their daily life with new strategies, such as differentreading techniques, help from dependants and using reading- and writingassisting technology. The informants argued that reading- and writing treatmentshould be stimulating, joyful and varied. To read and write could still fulfill apurpose and mean pleasure and happiness in daily life, but the informantshoped that their literacy would improve.
