Introduction: Domestic violence is a big public health problem and the hiddennumbers over victims are big. There is a lack of scientific research in the Nordiccountries when it comes to how the health- and medical care identify and care for thevictims of domestic violence. Aim: This literature review has two aims: To investigatewhat kind of methods maternal health services, child health services and gynecologyclinics in the Nordic countries use to discover women and children exposed to domesticviolence and to investigate if there are any guidelines to go by when a victim ofdomestic violence is identified. Method: A literature review. 12 articles were found inPubMed, Scopus and Cinahl and three more were included after a manual search. Theanalysis of the articles is based on identification of similarities and differences regardingidentification of victims of domestic violence, the interventions made when a victim isspotted and how the authors interpret their results. Results: The health care personneltrust their experience and intuition when it comes to identifying victims of domesticviolence. Both the women subjected to the questions and the health care personnelasking had a positive viewpoint on domestic violence screening. Established guidelinesto go by when a victim of domestic violence was discovered were only found in one ofthe articles. The nurses stated that even though health care personnel are obligated bylaw to report suspicion of child abuse, only five to eleven percent were actuallyreported. The authors agreed that there were a need for increased efforts when it comesto identification of abuse victims and that help and support were needed for the onesaffected. They also saw good reasons for implementing routines for screening in thematernal health care and gynecology clinics. Discussion: Routines and guidelines needto be developed and implemented. There is also a need for more scientific research.
