När man inte vet - Patienters upplevelser av att vårdas för ospecifik buksmärta på kirurgiska akutvårdsavdelningar


Introduction: To become acute ill and to be forced to seek treatment involves a difficult but also a vulnerable time for the individual. This acquires a good relationship between the nurse and the patient. At a surgical emergency ward patients with different diagnoses and trauma are treated. What distinguishes this specific type of ward is that care often occurs in a rapid rate and as a patient the environment may be experienced as stressed. The relationship with the nurse at the ward establishes a foundation for how the patient experiences the health care. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine how patients with acute abdominal pain experience treatment, care and information in surgical acute wards. Method: In order to conduct this study, a content analysis method will be carried out with interviews of former inpatients discharged from surgical acute wards. To test this study, a pilot was conducted on a specific ward with nine informants. Results: The patients described a feeling of support from the nurse that was appreciated and that made them feel recognised as individuals. The patients also felt that they where regularly informed by the nurse about what would happen, and this generated in a feeling of safety. The doctors´ round crystallized out as a negative factor. It went too fast and the patients experienced it difficult to understand the information that was given. An uncertainty and insecurity about what caused the abdominal pain permeated the interviews. Discussion: The nurse in a surgical acute ward has a significant and supporting role in her profession to help patients through their illness, as well as to create a calm and secure atmosphere, even though the hospital stay is usually short, and quick decisions are made about the care required.
