Genus, homosocialitet och givandet av referenser

En bibliometrisk studie av Svensk Biblioteksforskning

The aim of this two years master's thesis is to examine whether there are any gender based differences in the waymale and female researchers within library and information science publish and reference to other researchers. This within the Swedish context. Further, the aim is to examine the probability of gender playing a part in choiceof subject, which thereby also would effect the act of referencing. This is achieved through an analysis ofreference lists in the journal Svensk Biblioteksforskning between the years 1989 to 2009. The journal containsboth peer reviewed articles, as well as articles of a more popular scientific kind. As guidance during the study, ahandful of questions were used. The main three being; How is gender related to the act of giving references?;How is gender related to the choice of research subject?; Is it possible to find signs of homosociality within theswedish library and information communication, and if so, how is it manifested? To answer these questions acombination of bibliometric methods ? the main one being citation analysis ? and the theory of homosociality isused. Studies in the same vein, have been carried out before this, but not within a Swedish context or with thisspecific combination of bibliometric methods and analyses. Even though this study shows an increase in femaleauthors during the examined period, the references made to articles written by women are still lower than theequivalence to articles written by men. This might be due to the existance of male homosociality, where menprefer articles written by other men. Or it might be because of lagging. This in turn due to the fact that there arenot as many articles by female authors to make references to.
