Endast en utopi eller en realitet? En studie om Malmö stads interkulturella förhållningssätt i skolan

Since a decade back in time, Sweden is officially recognised as a multicultural society. Different cultures exist side by side and the city of Malmo is one of the clearest examples of this setting. In multicultural societies, the dichotomy of ?us? versus ?them? is common, which leads to segregation and asymmetrical relations of power. The concept of intercultural education is in theory known to be able to create a position of ?us? where every culture is equally recognized and reinterpreted and thus become an alternative to the dichotomy. Since the end of the 20th century, initiatives categorised as intercultural have been taken in Malmo, about to spread to the rest of the country. A study of the leading documents of this kind of work in school gives an indication that the work can be restricted by Eurocentric norms which talks against an intercultural and rather for a monocultural condition. With the support of interviews and observations of educators and participants in the city's intercultural settings, I have conducted a research of the city's intercultural condition. The result of the study is that there exist intercultural conditions only in a limited edition among the examples.
