Den moderna flerenhetsfranchisetagaren

En studie i utformandet av kontrollsystem hos växande franchisetagare

Franchise theorists have to a large extent failed to keep up with the actual development in global franchise chains. The recent emergence of fast growing multi-unit-franchisees has fundamentally been ignored, and it has been claimed that the new phenomenon can be regarded as a mere replication of the franchisors? structure and control system into sub hierarchies. This study however, suggests that the reality is more complex. Through conducting case studies of two Nordic multi-unit-franchisees, new theories are built explaining how and why control systems are designed the way they are. The results show that one of the examined organizations employs a control system based on close monitoring of their restaurant managers, whereas the other one believes in self control of the restaurant manager due to economic incentives. To explain these large differences in a generalized approach, three factors that influence the construction of control systems within multi-unit franchisees are suggested. These include; the role of the franchisor in the franchise chain, the adaption of the franchisee to the geographic context as well as the organizational culture and background of the franchisee company. The three influencing factors are conclusively put into one summarized model.
