Artificiell Insemination (AI) hos hund

en sammanställning över användandet av seminering inom hundaveln i Sverige under åren 1995-2004

The use of artificial insemination (A.I.) as an alternative to normal mating in dog breeding in Sweden are controlled by regulations from the Swedish Board of Agriculture and by ethical rules assigned by the Swedish Kennel Club. Only veterinarians, who have a specific certificate and are specially trained and educated, are allowed to perform inseminations in dogs. Each artificial insemination must be documented and reported to the Swedish Kennel Club (SKK) which, on the behalf of the Swedish Board of Agriculture, yearly presents statistics concerning the use of A.I. in Sweden. The objective of this study was to illustrate the use of artificial insemination in dog breeding in Sweden for the last decade, using the yearly reports from the Kennel Club during the period of 1995 to 2004. The material includes information of number of artificial inseminations performed, breed, the names of the active veterinarians performing the A.I., reasons for using A.I., choice of fresh or frozen semen, pregnancy rate and whether the dogs had a former documented normal reproduction ability/fertility. During this years 1 636 bitches were inseminated. The mean value was 181,8 each year. Fresh semen was used in 74 % and frozen semen in 26 % of the cases. The pregnancy rate varied between 47 % and 60 %, mean value 52 %. A minimum of 34 and maximum of 44 veterinarians were performing A.I. each year. In most cases (60 %) the reason for using A.I. was that either the female dog or the male dog was not available for mating. Between the years of 2000 and 2004 the number of bitches inseminated without earlier documented fertility by normal mating was 43 % to 50 %. The same figure for the male dogs varied between 12 to 26 %. The conclusion of the study was that the use of artificial insemination only presents a small part of dog breeding in Sweden and that the number of performed A.I. has been generally stabile during 1995 to 2004.
