The purpose of this Master?s thesis is to examine the information needs of reporters at a Swedish daily newspaper, and see if they are met by the information resources provided by the newspaper. It examines if there are resources which are not used and why. The examination is based on Henczel?s model for information auditing.

Today every organization is committed to some kind of environmental scanning in order to get necessary knowledge of the world around them. The acquisition, organization and storage of information in combination with a strategic use, is today an important factor for a successful organisation in any sector of our society.In this Master thesis I have studied how an organisation such as The Confederation of Swedish Enterprise (Svenskt Näringsliv) handles its information resources. I have also looked at the flow of information within the organization. The Confederation of Swedish Enterprise is Sweden?s largest business federation representing 50 member organizations and 55 000 member companies.

Electronic availability of information resources has increasingly become an important part of academic libraries everyday vocation. This is a fact that puts impetus on the libraries to know more about the way in which electronic information is being dispersed and handled. This thesis aims to comparatively evaluate Uppsala university library´s own metadata system Summon with the publicly available equivalent Google scholar. The evaluation is based on Péter Jacsó´s theories on database evaluation which concretely puts focus on Summon and Google scholar via the use and application of ten different criteria. The uses of precision and relevance criteria were also implemented as additional evaluation tools.

Uppsatsen undersöker hur informationsanvändningen och informationsbehoven ser ut i designstudenters arbete med olika projekt, i syfte att ta fram kvalitetskriterier för informationssystem och Informationsresurser. Underlaget för uppsatsen bygger på utforskande ostrukturerade djupintervjuer med 5 master-studenter i industriell design vid Umeå Designhögskola. Informanterna fick i detalj beskriva arbetsprocessen i minst ett projekt de deltagit i och frågor ställdes sedan kring vilken information som användes i denna process, och vad denna information bidrog med. Analysen av detta material gav 6 stycken kategorier av information. Dessa kopplades samman med olika användningsområden:Informationen inom kategorin textuell information (artiklar, böcker, projektbeskrivningar, etc.) kan delas in i två huvudsakliga användningsområden: A) den används för att få specifika faktauppgifter om ett område; och/eller B) den används för att mer allmänt göra sig en bild av hur relationerna i projektets kontext ser ut.

The purpose of this Master?s Thesis is to examine the information use and information behavior of the scientists at the company ?Forskningsbolaget?. For this purpose an Information Audit was carried out using both interviews with six managers and a questionnaire, which was sent out to the entire population of 213 scientists. After finding out what information the scientists use and how they obtain it the aim was to answer the question of to what extent the company?s Information Centre can meet these needs.

The aim of this master thesis was to examine the European Commission's information resources from a user perspective in order to clarify the needs and circumstances of the search of EU-information among students at Örebro University. 41 students participated in a survey, and four of them was interviewed. On the basis of Pendelton- and Chatmans theories of information behaviour in small worlds, it were assumed that the students' education and citizenship in the European Union affected their needs and the search of EU information.The study showed that the students needs for EU-related information has increased, with the current education, but also been linked to earlier educations. The students Citizens need were mainly associated with elections such as the EMU-election, but also in some cases to a need of the general knowledge.A review of the European Commission's information resources were made with an emphasis on European Documentation Centre, EDC. The survey showed that most students used the EDC and the EU-databases that was made available by the European Commission through the EDC and the university library but were not aware that they used EDC.The survey also showed that students made use of familiar sources and resources when they searched the EU-information, such as the library's regular database list, the library catalogue and search engine on the internet are not requested of other resources.

The aim of this Master?s thesis is to study the relations between internal information and the principal business objectives in a knowledge organization. The questions are: how does the organization behave to its internal information resources, how is the information management related to the principal objectives and strategies, what information policy does the organization develop, and how is the management experienced by the employees. The purpose was to study the supply and management of information designed for internal use and the study was carried out with qualitative, semi-structured interviews to get a picture of the internal information management. The informants were mostly key persons with deep knowledge of internal information.

Den svenska polisens arbete är kunskapsintensivt. Organisationen hanterar dagligen stora mängder information. Särskilt ordningspoliser har ett stort informationsbehov för att kunna agera på lämpligt sätt i olika situationer. Handlandet bygger på kännedom om lagrum och föreskrifter, men också uppgifter om medborgarna och vetskap om kollegors aktiviteter. Denna kunskap kan i stor utsträckning fås genom de informationssystem som finns inom organisationen.

Under våren 2013 infördes en ny söktjänst, en så kallad discoverytjänst, vid Umeå universitetsbibliotek (UB) och Medicinska biblioteket (MB). Discoverytjänster är ett användargränssnitt för informationssökning som ger användaren möjlighet att utifrån en enkel sökruta söka parallellt i alla bibliotekets resurser, utgångspunkten är att kombinera en Google-lik sökning med bibliotekets stora mängd av Informationsresurser. Syftet med uppsatsen är att undersöka hur undervisningen i informationssökning vid UB och MB påverkas vid införandet av den nya söktjänsten, hur undervisningen kan utvecklas vidare med utgångspunkt från söktjänsten samt om begreppet informationskompetens förändras vid införandet av en discoverytjänst. Undersökningen tar utgångspunkt i pedagogisk teori och teorier om informationskompetens samt tidigare forskning om discoverytjänster med fokus på användning av dessa verktyg i undervisning på bibliotek. Undersökningen utfördes genom en kombination av kvalitativa metoder.

Den tekniska utvecklingen har gått fort det senaste årtiondet och informationshantering har fått en helt förändrad innebörd i dagens moderna organisationer. De organisationer som inte är beredda att följa denna utveckling löper stor risk att hamna efter eller förlora konkurrenskraft till andra aktörer på marknaden. Genom investeringar i nya informationssystem och ny informationsteknologi skaffar sig organisationen verktyg att använda till att effektivisera och rationalisera sin verksamhet. Sådana investeringar är dock förenade med höga risker och raden av företag som genomfört misslyckade implementeringsförsök är lång. Flera faktorer avgör hur ett företag lyckas tillämpa informationssystem och informationsteknologi som resurser och utnyttja dessa på ett lönsamt sätt.

Nine out of ten larger companies have an intranet today which is supposed to improve the communication withinthe company and save money. A great part of these intranets were established in the beginning of the 1990?swithout giving any thought to the users and their needs. How does the communication inside the corporationslook like when the intranets that are supposed to be the source for every information request, aren?t usable? Whatother sources do the users use and how much?The aim of this master thesis is to examine information source selection at a specific company.
