In recent years, increasing emphasis has been placed on streamlining the supply chain. Keeping inventory and warehouses is considered to be a waste of resources. It is however difficult to completely eliminate the need for inventory and warehouses in a supply chain. The purpose of Warehousing is to provide a service for the customer. By keeping what the customer demands in inventory it is possible to make a quick delivery when a need arises.

In order to suggest improvements for the logistics of STARKA, we felt that we had to analyze all the activities which were related to STARKA's logistic processes. Our primary analysis consisted of a rough but comprehensive description of different functions in the company, and the relationship between them. This was performed by following a typical order through the company to see which functions were affected by the order.Since we needed a more thorough view of the company, we decided to analyze the different products STARKA currently has on the market, focusing on economic data such as turn-over, profit, profit margin, deficiency cost and cost of Warehousing. We also analyzed the company's choice of manufacturing processes, organization, Warehousing processes, strengths and weaknesses.These analyses gave us a clear understanding of the company and its processes. STARKA is a small, function oriented company with a wide range of products.

This thesis investigates how inventory management is practiced at a Swedish sawmill company, how practice differs from theory in this field and how the company could make more use of this theory. To do this we have performed a study on relevant literature and compared our findings with a field study on Moelven Valåsen AB. Our analysis shows that a large gap between theory and practice exists. We identify several reasons to this, including some sector specific problems when calculating cost rate for timber inventories. Suggestions on solutions to these problems and an example of how a cost rate can be estimated with relatively simple means are presented.

Att införa ett data warehouse kräver dock stort engagemang från alla inblandade i projektet och ett misslyckande kostar företaget mycket resurser och kapital.Detta arbete undersöker vilka faktorer som främst bidrar till att ett data Warehousingprojekt misslyckas. En litteraturstudie genomförs där misslyckade fall samt litteratur som beskriver författares generella uppfattningar angående faktorer med potentiell risk att orsaka ett misslyckat data Warehousingprojekt undersöks. Undersökningen leder fram till en lista med faktorer som anses ha stor potential att orsaka ett misslyckande. Att identifera dessa faktorer bidrar till att organisationer och företag får möjligheten att i ett tidigt skede av projektet förhindra att dessa uppstår, vilket kan spara stora ekonomiska resurser..

This essay answers the question: How can a manufacturing business fulfill the information demand in the processes; purchasing, production, Warehousing, order and delivery?The question has been answered through different kind of studies, such as literature, documents, Internet search, interviews and observations. The essay is written from a hermeneutic point of view and by using qualitative research. The result has been validated by two different manufacturing businesses.A simple information logistic model is the result of a comparison made between theory and empery. The aim of the model is to describe how a manufacturing business can fulfill the information demand by using different methods.

This paper is the result of a case study conducted at Uppåkra Mekaniska AB during the spring of 2006. The task that was presented by Uppåkra was to develop a basis for a decision for the planning activities at the company, so that in the future they can create lot-sizes which are based upon a total cost perspective. Total cost in regards to lot-sizing is defined as the sum of the administrative reordering costs and Warehousing cost per stock keeping unit.To collect data a series of interviews and observations were conducted. This data was then used during the lot-sizing simulation and analysis. The 15 units that the simulation was conducted on were grouped into three item classes depending how many different machine setups they required during the production process.

Denna rapport är resultatet av ett 10 veckor långt examensarbete om logistik i byggbranschen. Rapporten ska redovisa för- och nackdelar med Just In Time-logistik jämfört med lagerföring av material på byggarbetsplatsen. I arbetet ingår även att redovisa vissa extra kostnader som tillkommer i samband med respektive alternativ. Rapporten jämför de olika logistikmetoderna och utgår ifrån tre olika byggprojekt i stockholmsregionen som har helt olika förutsättningar. Målet med rapporten är att ta reda på om byggbranschen kan effektiviseras med Just In Time-logistik. Som hjälp för att nå målet har bland annat intervjuer gjorts och en enkät delats ut till de berörda på varje projekt.  Vad som kostar mest är inte helt enkelt att bestämma då vissa osäkra parametrar ingår i resultatet.

AbstractIt is important to choose which spare parts to keep in stock. With the right spareparts in stock the costs for inventory and production loss will decrease. Cavalieri et al. (2008) highlights that the balance between inventory cost and production loss is underestimated.  It affects the company and must be considered before decision on purchase.The problem with spare engines is that they are all more or less critical for the production. That can be a reason for why no previous research targeting engines and classification of with engine should be kept in stock has been found.

The economic development and competitiveness in Europe is heavily dependent on an efficient transport system. Movement of goods and people is essential for a competitive industry and successful trade. As a result of an intensified transport business, consumption of fossil fuels has increased dramatically. As a consequence, there are increased emissions of dangerous greenhouse gases. Transports are often mentioned as an area with high impact on the environment.

Detta examensarbete har utförts på OEM International, en Teknikhandelskoncern som främst säljer små komponenter för industriautomatisering. Snabb tillväxt medförde trånga och urvuxna lager, en på sikt ohållbar situation som resulterade i planer på ett nytt, större lager. Bygget av detta nya, stora lager i Tranås blev startpunkten för diskussioner kring hur lagerverksamheten egentligen bör bedrivas på lämpligast sätt. Tankar på att ha ett stort centrallager istället för dagens mindre, regionala väcktes, men då ifrågasattes också vilka konsekvenser en sådan förändring skulle bära med sig. Syftet med denna studie är därför att identifiera vilka faktorer som företag bör beakta vid beslut om eventuell överföring av befintliga regionala lagerpunkter till central ort.

Detta examensarbete har genomförts på Aven Rabbalshede AB i syfte att kartlägga företagets dåvarande situation i dess interna logistikflöde, för att sedan lägga fram förbättringsförslag som kan implementeras för att förbättra detta flöde. Målet var att reducera trucktrafiken i fabriken med minst tio procent.Aven Rabbalshede AB är ett tillverkningsföretag av lastpallar, träemballage, transportstöd och lådor. Företaget är en del av Avenkoncernen som är en av Skandinaviens ledande tillverkare av lastpallar och träemballage. Aven Rabbalshede AB är den största enheten inom koncernen med cirka 55 anställda och en produktion på cirka 1,3 miljoner lastpallar per år. Företaget hade en bristande struktur och systematik över truckflödet och materialhanteringen vilket har inneburit stora och många mellanlager samt andra svårigheter.Examensarbetet innebar att först och främst kartlägga vad respektive truck gjorde under en arbetsdag för att kunna analysera hur dåvarande situation såg ut.

Examensarbetet är en studie på uppdrag av SCA Transforest i Sundsvall, som är ett logistikföretag inom SCA Forest Products. Studien är ägnad en av Transforests fem hamnterminaler, Interforest Terminal Sundsvall, ITS. ITS har ett magasinsutrymme på 70.000 m2 och hade år 2004 ett genomflöde på 1.431.000 ton främst i form av skogsindustriella produkter. Genomflödet av gods har över tiden kraftigt ökat vid ITS och idag upplever man att utrymmet både i befintliga magasin och i terminalen som helhet är begränsat. Då en fortsatt ökning av godsvolymer är trolig och möjligheten att utöka terminalområdet är liten, vill ITS utreda hur flödena och lagerlogistiken i terminalen skulle kunna rationaliseras.

Executive SummaryThis final thesis has examined the effects of an increased centralization and better coord­in­ation of the distribution logistics at ABB in Västerås. The company is today strongly decent­ralized and there is a minimum of collaboration between the 20 business units. This is why the questions were raised; how could the business units coordinate outbound logistic activities and what effects would that provide. The obj­ect­ive of this final thesis is to provide basic data for a future decision-making which desc­r­ibe these effects.The report has mapped out the factors that are important to ABB in an evaluation of their logistic activities and how the outbound logistics work today. The four factors are cost efficiency, delivery service, environmental impact and logistics capability.
