The aim with the literature study is to inform about the risks that exists in large dairy farms(with focus on mastitis and hoof health) and to inform about the milk industry in Sweden.Personal comments from two study visits (Nötcenter Viken and Vadsbo Mjölk AB) arelinked together with the literature and forms into a discussion regarding sustainableagriculture versus the milk cow's welfare.The profitability for Sweden's milk farmers have decreased because of the decreased milkprice and current inflation. This leads to an increase in herdsize in order to make a profit.The milk cow herds in Sweden becomes fewer year by year and the herdsize increases. Theincreased herdsize can cause a decrease in the time the farmer spends per animal. This canaffect early disease detection and prolong the animals suffering.Swedish Board of Agriculture published (2008) statistics showing that today's milk cow ismedicated primarily because of two reasons; mastitis or hoof problems. Mastitis is thereason to two thirds of all treatments that are carried out.

This study was performed to investigate the possibility to use ultrasonography as a diagnostic tool for sub-clinical mastitis in dairy cows. Five cows with high cell counts, and four cows with low cell counts were selected as cases and controls, respectively, and their udders examined with ultrasound during a 5 week period. The image of the udders of cows with high cell counts exhibited small, hyper-echoic, rounded foci, approximately 1 cm in diameter, near the milk cisterns and the base of the teats. These changes were not found consistently in all cows with high cell count, however. Ultrasonography may be a valuable complementary tool in the diagnosis of sub-clinical mastitis in dairy cow, but more cases need to be monitored before its full value can be ascertained..

When does the protein profile in milk normalize after antibiotic treatment against clinical mastitis?

Concentration of protein in bovine milk is one of the most significant milk quality parameters, to a large extent determining the price for milk to the producer. Mastitis is a common disease among dairy cows, negatively affecting not only milk yield but also milk protein composition. Milk from mastitic cows tends to have lower cheese yield, negatively affected processability properties and sensory quality, due to changed protein quality and composition. Poorer milk protein quality would have an economically negative impact on dairy industry. Only few studies have investigated the short term effects of mastitis on milk protein composition.

Juverinfektion hos tackor med kliniskt friska juver : bakterieförekomst och celltal i mjölk

Subklinisk mastit (juverinflammation utan synliga symtom) är vanligt hos flera mjölkproducerande arter inklusive får. I kött- och pälsfårbesättningar kan subklinisk mastit ge lägre slaktvikt hos lammen till följd av minskad mjölkproduktion hos tackan. Risken att lammen försöker dia en annan tacka ökar om de inte blir mätta av sin mammas mjölk. Eftersom de flesta mastiter är bakteriellt orsakade kan lammens tjuvdiande vara en potentiell smittväg för juverinfektioner. För att förhindra smittspridning behövs snabba och pålitliga fältmetoder för att detektera juverinfektion. Syftet med studien var att kartlägga förekomsten av juverinfektioner hos tackor med kliniskt friska juver i svenska kött- och pälsfårbesättningar.

Sjukdomsfrekvens och utslagningsorsaker hos kor med 12 respektive 15 månaders kalvningsintervall

The incidence of many of the most common diseases in dairy cattle has been proven to be highest during the time closest to calving. It is possible that the current breeding strategy with 12 month calving intervals increases the risk for disease in dairy cattle, which is problematic concerning both animal welfare and for economic reasons. The economic incentives behind a calving interval of 12 to 13 months have mainly been based on milk- and feed- costs and no costs due to diseases or fertility disturbances have been included.The aim of this study was to see if a lengthening of the calving interval would result in lower disease frequency. The hypothesis is that cows with a planned calving interval of 15 months have a lower disease incidence than cows with a calving interval of 12 months due to less number of calvings. Therefore the difference in disease frequency should be larger when compared over a long period of time, such as over lifetime, since cows with a longer calving interval experience fewer calvings.The study was performed between August 17th, 1994, and January 24th, 2007.

Good feeding practices are a basic aspect of good calf health. During the calf's first few months the calf is fed with purchased milk replacer or raw milk straight from the cow. On all farms, it will be a surplus of milk that may not be delivered to the dairy for various reasons. Mastitis, an inflammation of the udder mainly caused by a bacterial infection, induces an increase in the somatic cell count (SCC) in milk and is consequently one of several factors affecting SCC in milk. In this literature review it is investigated whether SCC; on udder quarter, cow composite or bulk tank milk level, can be used as a quality marker with focus on milk composition in terms of the content of fat, lactose, total protein, casein and whey protein. According to this literature review the relation between SCC and milk composition is not reliable either on udder quarter, cow composite or bulk tank milk level. SCC was related to lactose, casein and whey protein on udder quarter level; lactose and whey protein on cow composite level and lactose on bulk tank milk level.

Juverinfektion hos tackor med kliniskt friska juver : möjliga riskfaktorer och djurägarattityder

Juverinflammation (mastit), oftast orsakad av en juverinfektion, är en betydelsefull sjukdom hos får och den vanligaste utslagsorsaken hos svenska tackor registrerade i Fåravelförbundets avelsregister. För att kunna förebygga juverinfektion är det viktigt att ha kunskap om riskfaktorer för juverinfektion. Det finns dock få studier som undersökt detta och mer kunskap om riskfaktorer för juverinfektion behövs. Syftet med denna studie var att försöka undersöka möjliga riskfaktorer för juverinfektion hos svenska tackor med kliniskt friska juver. Vidare var syftet, att med hjälp av en utskickad enkät, undersöka svenska fårägares kunskaper om och attityd till mastit som sjukdom. Mjölkprover från 753 tackor i 22 svenska kött- och pälsproducerande fårbesättningar togs vid lamning och/eller avvänjning mellan juni 2013 och augusti 2014. Ett protokoll för juverundersökning och tackdata fylldes i för samtliga provtagna tackor.
