In subsequent to Post-colonialism the African nations have dilated into different political directions. While some nations have established well-functioning democracies, others are still under authoritarian regimes. The aim of this thesis is to examine if civil society has an impact on democratic development in West Africa. Therefore the theoretical starting point is Putnam?s theory of social capital, but this study will also examine other possible causal explanations for democratic transition.This study will be based on a comparative analysis of Ghana and Guinea.

AbstractThe political parties in Sweden are losing members. This is seen as a problem because the political parties are the base and the recruiting ground for members to decision-making bodies. Social movements are seen as a place where people with a modest background could express their opinions and also learn the political process. These movements have also lost members during the last decades and this could seriously affect the representation of lower social groups among the decision-makers. This essay emanates from Robert D.

The purpose of this essay is to study causes for the lack of political trust in Europe and especially in Sweden. The essay starts with a presentation of two theories about the reasons for low political trust. Robert D. Putnam among others presents a theory that gives social capital an important role when viewing the low political trust. As Putnam sees it a person that participates in any kind of organization, political or not, develop trust for other human beings that in the long run affects political trust.

Miljonprogrammet tillkom genom en storslagen politisk satsning under det expansiva 60-talet. Produktionen lades utanför städerna och vilade på funktionalism och stordriftsfördelar. Trots minutiös social ingenjörskonst hade ingen kunnat förutse att många av de hyresgäster, som befolkade miljonprogrammet till en början, inom några år skulle flytta till egna småhus. Kvar blev de socioekonomiskt svagare hyresgästerna. Dessa områden präglas idag överlag av många in och utflyttningar.

ABSTRACTSince Robert D. Putnam first wrote about the causes behind the regional differences in economic and political development in Italy, the theory of social capital has truly flourished in the fields of social science. This days you constantly hear politicians and scholars stressing the important role of the quality of the social fabric to a society?s wellbeing. There all looking at ways to construct policies and institutions that help the spread of social capital.

Sverige har sedan början av 1900-talet haft en stark folkrörelse där det ideella arbetet har varit en självklarhet. I dagens samhälle tyder mycket på att de äldre folkrörelsernas organisationsprinciper förlorar mark. I dess ställe har principer som centralisering och avlönat ledarskap kommit att ta över allt mer. Uppsatsen syftar därför till att försöka analysera hur det ökade ekonomiska inslagen i det ?traditionella ideella föreningslivet? påverkar utvecklingen av socialt kapital i samhället? Teoretiskt har främst Putnam kommit att användas som anser att deltagandet i frivilliga sammanslutningar utgör grunden för skapandet av socialt kapital.

The title of this study came about from the title of Robert Putnams book Bowling Alone, where Putnam mentions that less people are bowling in teams than before. Bowling is still a large leisure activity in the USA but people tend to bowl more and more in small groups and less in organized teams. This study deals with social capital and leisure time. Its aim is to find out if some Swedish people create social capital on their leisure time and also how do they spend their leisure time. Robert Putnams book Bowling Alone serves as main background material along with the work by Bo Rothstein.

Urbanization and the flight of the creative class drains the countryside when it comes to creativity and talent. Especially the young leave sleepy societies. Richard Florida claims that the city attracts the creative class and enables for economic growth to flourish. Robert Putnam adds to the picture by saying social capital might be equally effective as nourishment for growth. In Uddebo, a rural village in the south of Sweden one combines the two creating a vivid society where creativity flies high and ideas fertilize each other?s.

Syftet med studien är att genom en demokratiaspekt synliggöra de faktorer unga anser vara avgörande för att de skall uppleva ett reellt inflytande över beslut i frågor som rör dem. Det är en kvalitativ studie med ett explorativt tillvägagångssätt som bygger på gruppintervjuer med ungdomar, deltagande observationer och sekundära källor av statistiskt material och utredningar från Ungdomsstyrelsen. Dess teoretiska utgångspunkter tas i makt och demokrati genom framförallt Giddens, Baumann och Bourdieu. För analysen av det empiriska materialet har symbolisk interaktionism och Asplunds teorier om social responsivitet använts.Situationerna som behandlas omfattar det som ungdomarna själv har ansett viktiga men innehåller inte frågor som berör hem och familj.Den demokratiska aspekten är tydlig. Genom regeringens proposition om en speciell ungdomspolitik lyfter man fram vikten av tillgång till verklig makt och rätten till välfärd.

The aim of this study is to explore hiphop music as an aspect of youth socialization and the relationship between music creation and identity. The study is conducted through five semi- structured qualitative individual interviews. Our theoretical starting points are Putnam?s (2000) bridging and bonding social capital symbolic interactionism. We also have used a model of learning presented by Fornäs, Lindberg and Sernhedes (1989).

The purpose of this research is to examine some historical aspects of Robert Putnam?s thesisabout voluntary associations and social capital. According to a micro perspective theory ofsocial capital the trust and reciprocity required and created by associations is important toexplain the disparity between institutional performance and socioeconomic development ofsocieties. Our purpose with this study was to look at the connection between social capital and integration. Particularly if meetings between people from different cultures can increase social capital and in that way affect integration. We start by identifying the social integration perspective we are going to use through out the study and then we introduce social capital theory as a way of narrowing down the field even more. The study was done through six semi structured interviews. We interviewed three women that was established in the Swedish society and three women that had immigration background.

Its focus is on the development in Northern Ireland politics after the implementationof the Agreement which was ratified in a referendum. The essay is a case studywhich analyzes the progress towards an Assembly Government and powersharingbetween the unionists and the nationalists/republicans. The development is analyzed with Robert D. Putnam's theory of Two-Level Games? The essay first analyzes the changes in the unionist society where the opinion towards the agreement has been negative which depends on the concessions made by the unionist.

Syftet med denna studie är att se hur det sociala kapitalet ser ut i Sverige utifrån länsuppdelningen. Syftet är även att studera sambandet mellan det sociala kapitalet och ett antal faktorer, på individnivå och länsnivå. I denna studie har jag använt mig av material från SOM-institutet och gjort en jämförande studie för att dels beskriva hur det ser ut men även pröva teorier. Jag har använt mig av teorin kring det sociala kapitalet som främst Robert D. Putnam och Bo Rothstein har problematiserat och definierat.

Robert Putnam har argumenterat för att länder med ett starkt och utbrett ideellt engagemang har goda förutsättningar för skapandet av socialt kapital. Då Sverige, i ett internationellt perspektiv, kan anses ha ett utbrett och aktivt deltagande i frivilliga sammanslutningar torde förutsättningarna för skapandet av socialt kapital vara goda i Sverige. Tillgången till socialt kapital leder i sin tur, enligt Putnam, till en mer generell tillit och ett förtroende som sträcker sig utöver de individuella kontaktnäten och slutligen även innefattar samhället i stort. En hög grad av socialt kapital utvecklar alltså en förmåga att inte bara se till sin egen nytta utan även till samhällets bästa. En rad studier pekar emellertid på att det traditionella föreningslivet står inför stora svårigheter med bland annat ett minskat engagemang och allt färre medlemmar vilket skulle kunna låta påskina att det en gång så starka sociala kapitalet i Sverige håller på att urholkas.
