Obesity is a growing global health problem among both humans and cats with the risk of several medical conditions as a result. This can be detected and prevented by body condition assessment methods in order to visualize and detect possible or potential weight problems in cats.To achieve the best results, owner and cat should be introduced to this as soon as possible in their contact with veterinary care.Purina Body Condition System and Walthams Feline Body Mass Index are both morphometric assessment methods that are quick, relatively cheap and simple to perform. 20 cats with owners and a veterinary nurse student participated in a study to compare pet owners and a veterinary nurse student's assessment of the Purina Body Condition System and WALTHAM's Feline Body Mass Index. The body condition assessment methods were compared with each other, and it was investigated which method was preferred, the body condition distribution among the studied cats and if long-haired cats' body condition was more often misjudged. Results of the study showed a significant difference between pet owners and the veterinary nurse student's assessment of Purina BCS with a difference in median of 1.

Diabetes mellitus is characterised by persistent hyperglycemia in all species. Fructosamine is a glycated protein reflecting blood glucose concentration during the preceding weeks. It has become a valuable analysis to differentiate persistent hyperglycemia from transient stress induced hyperglycemia in cats. It is also used to evaluate current therapy in diabetic patients. Although fructosamine is a well accepted analysis, it is sometimes regarded with scepticism.

Vilka konsekvenser detta fått för katten är ännu oklart. Hypotesen som låg till grund för denna litteraturstudie var att de problembeteenden som seshos dagens katter delvis beror av den stress som begränsandet av den naturliga miljön utgör. Syftet med studien var således att med hjälp av vetenskapliga artiklar klargöra vilka problembeteenden som förekommer, varför katten utvecklat dem samt hur de kan åtgärdas.

Hypothermia during anaesthesia is a well-known phenomenon that may cause several side-effects such as greater risk of postoperative wound infection and increased risk of heart complications. The most efficient way to avoid this is to prevent hypothermia from occurring. The aim of this paper was to compile the research on the most efficient way to prevent hypothermia during anaesthesia for cats and dogs, and to compare these results to how Swedish animal hospitals prevent hypothermia today. To investigate this, a survey was sent out to several animal hospitals around Sweden to see what methods they used to prevent hypothermia in their clinics. It is difficult if not impossible to prevent the body temperature from falling slightly when anaesthesia is induced because of the drug interactions in the body that follow from the drugs given. A 1-1,5°C decrease in body temperature is to be expected and is difficult to avoid.

Rörelseförmågan påverkas av kroppsutformning och flageller, men även antal adhensiner och möjlighet till ureasproduktion är viktiga virulensfaktorer.

Platelet aggregation is a major and common problem in blood samples from cats. This greatly affects the accuracy of counting of the platelets. Because of the difficulties in counting feline platelets, results for patients and reliable reference values for cat platelets are currently so inaccurate as to be almost useless in diagnosis of thrombocytopenia. In this study we used an effective method to prevent platelet aggregation. Blood was collected in CTAD test tubes and prostaglandin E1 was added to the blood sample.

Akromegali är en ovanlig sjukdom som innebär en överproduktion av tillväxthormon (GH). Hos katter orsakas den oftast av en hypofystumör. Pica is a behavior that can be seen in several animal groups. In cats, it means that they are eating, chewing or licking on material that is non-food. In this study the data was collected through an online survey. In total 522 responses, of which 26% of the cats were exhibiting pica. It was found that 28% of the housecats and 26% of purebred cats exhibited pica.

The objective was to examine the frequency of unwanted behaviors in the Swedish feline population and what factors in the environment, inheritance and past life that have an influence on the frequency. SLU?s web poll generator was used to create a web poll which insinuated that it was a poll with objective to make an inventory of the Swedish feline population. I wanted to avoid that only owners to cats with unwanted behaviors answered the poll. The web link to the poll was sent to SLUs students and posted on Internet forums for people interested in cats.

Felin idiopatisk cystit (FIC) är den vanligaste formen av symtom i de nedre urinvägarna hos katt. FIC ger symtom som hematuri, smärta vid urinering, frekvent urinering med enbart en liten mängd urin per gång, periuri (urinering utanför lådan) och även obstruktion av uretra kan förekomma. Dessvärre är FIC en uteslutningsdiagnos som ställs när diagnostiska tester inte kan påvisa något som förklarar symtomen.Etiologin till FIC är fortfarande okänd. Studier har dock kunnat visa att symtomen som associeras med FIC kan förvärras av stressande omständigheter, varför en inblandning av det sympatiska nervsystemet och/eller hypotalamus, hypofys och binjurebarks-axeln (HPA-axeln) misstänks. Olika studier har redovisat ökade plasmakoncentrationer av kortikotropin frisättande hormon (CRH) och adrenokortikotropt hormon (ACTH) under stress samt högre plasmakoncentrationer av noradrenalin hos katter med FIC jämfört med friska katter.
