The purpose of this study was to investigate how Islam and Muslims are portrayed a) in results from studies on Swedish teaching materials, and b) in articles in Swedish media newspapers. The study was conducted through two separate studies. In the first study, five previous research reports on how Islam and Muslims are portrayed in Swedish teaching materials were analysed in order to discern the main results regarding the portrayal of Islam and Muslims. In the second study, newspaper articles from 11 Swedish newspapers were analysed in order to discern which central themes emerge in the description of Muslims and Islam in said newspaper articles, as well as which properties and features are attributed to Muslims and Islam in the articles studied. In both studies, the data was analysed inductively through a qualitative content analysis.

Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka förekomsten av icke-västerländska författarskap i läroböcker för svenska på gymnasiet. Undersökningens grund är en pedagogisk textanalys, vilket är en form av innehållsanalys. Fyra läroböcker avsedda för svenskämnet på gymnasiet har analyserats genom en pedagogisk textanalys med såväl kvantitativa som kvalitativa inslag. Uppsatsens teoretiska utgångspunkt har främst varit Edward Saids postkoloniala teori och Mekkonen Tesfahuneys tankar om ett eurocentriskt utbildningssystem. Vikten av ett etnografiskt förhållningssätt i skolan är också en del av teorin.

Under hösten 2006 genomförde Piratförlaget en kampanj för boken ?Edward Finnigans upprättelse? där förlaget hyrde säljplatser i ett 20-tal bokhandlar. Detta var helt nytt i bokbranschen och beskrevs som kontroversiellt av branschtidningen Svensk Bokhandel. Uppsatsens syfte är att undersöka hur uthyrning av säljyta i butik uppfattas av svenska bokhandlare och förlag samt vilka effekter det kan få för sales promotion. Då bokbranschen ser annorlunda ut än övriga dagligvaruhandeln anser vi att det är intressant att sammankoppla uthyrning av säljyta till sales promotion vilket, enligt vår uppfattning, inte används i någon större omfattning i bokhandeln.Uppsatsens teoretiska bakgrund består i huvudsak av Sudhir & Raos (2006) teori som behandlar fördelar och nackdelar med ?slotting allowances?, vilket är den engelska termen för uthyrning av säljyta.

Uttryck för funderingar har påfunnits om befolkningens stöd innehar den signifikans i irreguljära konflikter som förmedlas av prominenta teoretiker i dagsläget, och därmed avspeglas i aktuella doktriner. Somliga menar att teoretikernas irreguljära krig inte överensstämmer med dagens då dessa författades primärt för att kontra revolutionära uppror. Dessa motsättningar mynnar ut i det vetenskapliga problemet som avses avhandlas, nämligen: innehar faktorn ?stöd från befolkningen? för hög signifikans, i relation till att försätta motståndarens stridande enheter ur stridbart skick, i aktuella styrdokument för irreguljära konflikter?Syftet med detta arbete är att undersöka om incitament finns för fortsatt, mer djuplodande undersökning i problematiken. Detta görs genom en teoriprövande fallstudie där Sir Charles Edward Callwells teorier i Small Wars: Thier Principles & Practice, vilka uttalat förespråkar att motståndarens enheter ska slås, appliceras på Vietnamkriget där den uttalade strategin inledningsvis innebar vinnandet av befolkningens stöd.Slutsatsen av studiens resultat anses vara att fortsatt forskning är önskvärd för att kunna befästa eller förkasta kritiken mot rådande paradigm.

The scope of this investigation is the conditions under which readings of Repulsion (1965), and its depicted mental illness, took place in Sweden during the censorship debates in 1965, and also how the reception was related to narration and subjectivity in the film. The reason for this is the strong reactions to the images of the main character?s inner state, and concerns about negative effects in the public, that were raised. One major concern is how the film articulates discourses through which meanings are produced; that is, how it works as social technology. My thesis is therefore structured around two levels; textual analysis and discourse analysis.

This paper is named ?The status of the programme is low? ? Gymnasium teacher?s thoughts and attitudes towards students in the vocational- and the educational programmes. The purpose is, as the title reveals, to examine the attitude of four teachers in the Swedish gymnasium towards the vocational and the educational programmes and the students that attend either one of them. This purpose is accompanied by research which says that the educational programmes? status is higher than one of the vocational programmes.

My paper, ?Us and Them ? an analysis of the creation of ?the Other? in The Reluctant Fundamentalist and The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas?, aims to examine Mohsin Hamid´s and John Boyne´s novels from the years 2007 and 2008. The paper tries to answer the following questions: How is ?the Other?and?Us and Them?created in the novels? And: What consequences does the thinking in terms of ?the Other?and?Us and Them?lead to in the novels? The examination is done through the method of close reading and by applying the theory of Orientalism and Edward W. Said?s analysis of the theory to the reading.It is, I believe, of utmost importance for teachers to create unity among their pupils, and peaceful and democratic classrooms where co-work is promoted.

Edward Said's book Orientalism (1978) is the most important reference point in the post-colonial theory and describes how the West is dominant over the Orient. There is a clear distinction between "us" and "the other" and the purpose of this study is that, from a postcolonial perspective, focusing on Said's theoretical concepts "the other" and "discourse", examining how two foreign-born people with ethnic backgrounds living in the same place, are looking at themselves, at other foreign-born and native Swedes. My questions to answer this are; ?what are the concepts of "the other" and "discourse" and is it possible to use these concepts to examine how foreign-born people are looking at themselves, at other foreign-born and native Swedes in a specific location??, ?who is "the other" in a place where there are almost as many native Swedes as foreign-born??, and ?how do these two foreign-born people with ethnic backgrounds perceive Norrliden as a place and what effect has that place had on their identity?? I have used a post-colonial philosophical ground and a qualitative approach, focusing on two different interviews with two men, living in Norrliden. In Norrliden almost 50% of the inhabitants are foreign-born were both of the interview-persons are feeling safe and secure.

Abstract:The old established description gunboat diplomacy has in modern time changed to a broader and more nuanced definition called maritime diplomacy. But what is maritime diplomacy and how is it described? This essay analyses the theories from the Englishman James Cable and the American Edward Luttwak. Both Cable and Luttwak represent nations which have a global security interests and deploy their maritime forces worldwide. The foundation for their theories is power politics.

The way in which media discusses religion has changed over time. Due to the separation of state and church in 2000, the Swedish state to a lesser extent legitimizes its political ruling with references to religious concepts. As a result, a higher tolerance towards religious minorities can be said to have taken place. This is an ambiguous change however, where critique raised towards religious practices and expressions of minorities also occurs to a higher extent. The public debate is in large part conducted through the media, but is also seen to be produced and reproduced through the media?s discourse.

My project is based on a journey to India in thewinter of 2011-12. I knew that I wanted to dosome sort of travelouge based on my photos fromthe trip. I also knew I wanted to do some sort ofbook. How this, the story of my travels in India,would be told and what the theme was going to be,that was more elusive.I started out with the notion of a retelling of theold epic Ramayana and combining this with mytravels and the critical perspective of Edward W.Saids Orientalism. This proved to be an impossibleequation and I also had to rework my plan to fitthe tight timeframe I had.

Syftet med uppsatsen har varit att kartlägga hur läroböcker i kristendomskunskap respektivereligionskunskap framställer den icke-kristne individen och hur denna framställning förändrasöver en period av 150 år. De frågor uppsatsen har besvarat är dels vilka icke-kristna religionersom finns representerade i materialet, dels hur individer tillhörande dessa religioner framställsoch dels vilka diskursiva förändringar som kan utläsas i materialet över tid. Forskning påläroböcker ur ett historiskt perspektiv är ett eftersatt område, detta trots att tidigare forskning lyfter fram hur betydelsefull läroboken är för elevernas lärande. Fyra läroböcker har valts ut för undersökningen. De tre första har tidigare använts vid Hvitfeldtska högre läroverk i Göteborg.Den fjärde läroboken är utvald utifrån att den är utgiven efter den senaste skolreformen.

Syftet med denna uppsats är att genom textanalys granska ett antal läroböcker i Engelska A för gymnasiet, utgivna i Sverige under tiden 1995-2003, för att därigenom utforska i vilken mån ett interkulturellt synsätt kommer till uttryck i dessa läroböcker. Slutsatserna som dras utifrån studien visar att ett interkulturellt synsätt betonar ett dynamiskt möte, där mötet leder till en djupare förståelse av sig själv och andra. För att mötet skall vara framgångsrikt förordas en plats utanför den egna och den andres kultur, vilken möjliggör ett utvidgande av den egna horisonten. Vidare visar textanalysen av läroböckerna att en vanligt förekommande skildring av kulturer i den övriga världen, är konstruktionen av ?de andra?, som skiljer sig mot hur den engelsktalande vita kulturen skildras som ?oss?.

The mental constructions of other places are based on impressions from everything that surrounds us in our everyday life, e.g. pictures, videos, texts and narratives. The tourism industry is especially influential when it comes to creating the image of before ?unknown places?. Furthermore, it has a tendency to embellish and idealize people and places located in what is commonly known as the Third World.

The main objective of this research was to examine description of Islam in two different schoolbooks about religion. The rapport starts with an introduction of the subject and discusses the background of the topic. After the presentation, aims, and the questions I present my methods and material used in this research. Following the method and material is earlier research where I mention some of the previous rapports and results of researchers within the discourse. The theory used to investigate the text is postcolonial and the orientalism theory presented by Edward Said.The intention of the research was to answer if the books representation contributed to an oriental description of Islam and Muslims and to see how the text and pictures where used and structured.
