When Sweden acceded to the European Union in 1995 the term social economy was introduced to the Swedish context, gradually replacing the term civil society. This replacement can be seen as an indicator of a changing meaning of what the concept of civil society used to stand for.The aim of this essay is to study if it is possible to identify changing perceptions of the role of civil society for democracy in Sweden in government bills between 2002 and 2008, and, if so, what effect does this have on the delineation between the civil society and the government.An analytical model is proposed consisting of two dimensions which both capture the roles of civil society for democracy and the model examines how those roles relate to the government.The conclusion is that the government still sees the main function of civil society as a democratic school and a change agent for democracy. However, there is strong evidence to suggest that the civil society is increasingly regarded as more of a welfare producer than a fosterer of democracy..

Globalization is one of the most popular catchphrases in the international relations debate today. Globalization is a complex concept with as many definitions as authors. National borders or jurisdictions do not control the phenomenon, instead, it is moving without restraints from region to region. Is this a threat to the sovereignty of nation-state and an end of the system of Westphalia? Does the globalization undermine the nation-state by increased factor-mobility, less tax revenue and participations multilateral co-operations, as the globalists think? Or is it strengthens its importance by offering better allocation of resources through free and healthy competition, as the skeptics believe.The aim of this thesis is to analyze theories of globalization by applying them on Sweden and the Netherlands.

På grund av den urbanisering som sker i världen idag har förtätning börjat prägla stora städers utformning. För att bygga en stad som klarar av förändringar och som är attraktiv för människorna som bor där krävs det att den är hållbar. Syftet med kandidatarbetet är att tydliggöra problematiken kring begreppet hållbar stadsutveckling och undersöka hur arbetet med hållbar stadsutveckling bedrivs i byggnadsprojektet Smaragden i Rosendal. En granskning av dokument från Uppsala kommun tydliggjorde Uppsala kommuns målsättning kring en hållbar stadsutveckling. Intervjuer genomfördes med beställaren för projektet, Rosendal Fastigheter, och arkitektbyrån Christensen & Co.

Today many separated children and youth up to 18 years - children in the sense of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child - flee from war and armed conflicts around the world. Many of them come to Sweden for protection and to apply for asylum.The aim of this study is to examine how the national Swedish news agency Tidningarnas Telegrambyrå - TT - constructs the image of separated children and youth. The main research questions have been: How does TT construct the image of the separated refugee children? The more detailed questions put to examine this main question have been: what are the issues being focused in the reporting and what discourses, voices and sources are let into the journalistic material?The theoretical perspective should be considered as social constructionistic where the basic idea is that the image of the separated child also constructs the way society looks upon them, their rights and their needs, affecting how these children will be welcomed and treated when thay arrive in our society. The empirical study is a qualitative analysis of text, produced in the span 2007- April 20th 2010.

Att maximera sjukhusens och räddningstjänstens täckning av befolkningen är en viktig säkerhetsfråga som diskuteras inom bland annat hälsovårdsplaneringen. Geografiska informationssystem (GIS) kan användas som ett hjälpmedel för att analysera och presentera andelen befolkning som är utanför sjukvårdens täckningsområden och även visa variationer på täckningsområdena när anläggningar slås ihop eller läggs ned. Syftet med arbetet är att presentera en ny, vektorbaserad nätverksanalys i GIS-miljö för att undersöka hur täckningsområdena för räddningstjänsten i Uppsala kommun påverkas.För att utföra nätverksanalysen användes data från Nationella Vägdatabasen (NVDB) över Uppsala kommun. Attributen som användes från NVDB innehöll information om framförallt hastighetsbegränsningar, väghierarki, tid, restriktioner och gatunamn. Täckningsområdena beräknades med ArcGIS och tilläggsprogrammet Network Analyst och resulterade i en översiktlig karta med räddningstjänstens insatstider och även enskilda insatskartor.

The municipality in Uppsala has set up goals for the future work concerning climate-and energy issues. As one way to achieve these goals the municipality started aproject called Uppsala climate protocol. During one of the project meetings anabatement map was presented. The map showed what savings in carbon dioxide andmarginal costs for different actions can be made. Statistics show that 40 % of thepopulation in Uppsala lives in a condominium.

The thesis describes the following main question: Will the administrative labour during football tournaments be made easier with the help from a mobile web service or will it convey to unnecessary extra work? To be able to give a good and qualified answer to this question, the thesis will in the beginning describe how the technique for such a system might look like and also describe the existing administrative moments during a football tournament, this is too give the reader a deeper understanding for further reading. The thesis then goes on to describe a concrete system which is tested on three football tournaments. On the basis of the tests, interviews and through analysis of these the thesis will be able to answer our questions. The result which we present in the thesis have unfolded through testing of the system on three chosen football tournaments.

Syftet med detta examensarbete är att kartlägga potentialen för energieffektiviseringar i småhus och flerbostadshus i Uppsala kommun fram till 2050. Studien inkluderar både befintliga och framtida byggnader. Uppsala kommun arbetar tillsammans med flera olika organisationer i kommunen med att ta fram en ?Färdplan för ett klimatpositivt Uppsala år 2050? (kallad Färdplan 2050), detta med uppdrag av Naturvårdsverket. Målet med Färdplan 2050 är att ta fram en långsiktsprognos för hur Uppsala kommun kan minska utsläppen av växthusgaser med 45 % per invånare till år 2020 jämfört med år 1990.

We would like to learn more about how the restrictive policy against incentive programmes affects the board?s of Swedish state owned commercial firms ability to govern management in an efficient way. We also want to find out if there are different consequences in reference to this that are not directly linked to corporate governance issues. Our empiric observations have been made in order to profoundly explore the subject and examine it through the eyes of professional individuals, all expressing different views and standpoints. We conclude that the most efficient structure is when an active board is complemented by a well structured and individualised incentive programme.

This thesis conducted at the University of Uppsala investigateshow well a prefabricated building component from the manufacturerMasonite Lättelement AB can be incorporated into ahouse projected to accomplish the demanding criteria of a passivehouse. The thesis is organized as a comparison betweenthe prefabricated elements and an on-site built component fromthe passive house area of Oxtorget in Värnamo, Sweden. Theaspects investigated were air leakage, energy, moisture, economyand noise conditions.Results of the comparative analyzes shows that the prefabricatedproducts were capable of accomplishing the requirementsof passive houses and therefore this thesis should beviewed as a basis to confirm that the technology of prefabricatedbuilding components today in Sweden are mature enoughto be a significant part of the passive houses that are to be builtin the near future. The aim of this study was to describe how retired nurses, educated in Uppsala, and students at Uppsala University's nursing program experience the importance of vocation in education and career choice. None of the participants had experienced vocation as a reason for choosing nursing as a career. The main reason was instead a desire to work with people. They also expressed that it was a profession like any other. The retired nurses said that the education was something of an up-bringing with religious elements.
