Den antimikrobiella peptiden LL-37 finns uttryckt i alla kroppens slemhinnor och lagras i stora mängder i sekundära granula hos neutrofiler och monocyter. Förutom dess antimikrobiella effekt uppvisar LL-37 pro- alternativt anti-apoptotisk effekt på eukaryota celler beroende på celltyp. I denna studie visar vi för första gången den pro-apoptotiska effekten av LL-37 på den humana osteoblastcellinjen MG63. Vid stimulering med 4?M iakttogs en reduktion av cellantalet med 40% och en utbredd celldöd kunde fastställas genom Trypan Blue-infärgning.

Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka förekomsten av Giardia intestinalis hos kor och kalvar i 13 konventionella och 13 ekologiska mjölkbesättningar i sydöstra Sverige. I varje besättning togs träckprover från nio till tio kor (n=259) och fem till tio icke avvanda kalvar (n=220) som analyserades med ELISA. 25 av 26 besättningar hade minst ett positivt djur, vilket tyder på ubikvitär förekomst av parasiten. Giardia var betydligt vanligare hos unga djur, med endast en positiv (0,4 %) av 259 provtagna kor, medan totalt 44 % (97/220) av kalvarna var infekterade. Yngsta positiva kalven var sex dagar gammal.

We have made a litterature study about pain in animals. In this studie we have brought up areas like sign of pains in animals, pain relief and the care perspective. Pain is perceived when body tissue is damaged or nearly damaged by stimuli. Nociceptors, which are receptors placed at nerve endings, responds to a provocation of pain and transmit an impulse along the nerve to the brain via the spinal cord. Pain is urgent or chronic, and can be divided into nociceptive pain (somatic pain and visceral pain) and neuropathic pain. Different pain mechanisms can arise, such as referred pain, which is when signals of pain are referred to other parts of the body.

Det finns en direkt koppling mellan den allt högre mjölkavkastningen hos våra mjölkraser SRB och SLB och vissa reproduktionsstörningar. Posten fruktsamhet är idag den största utslagsorsaken i kokontrollen. Högre produktionsnivåer leder till kortare och mer svårupptäckta brunster eller t o m till att brunst helt uteblir. Det tar också längre tid för kon att komma i brunst efter kalvning. Allra tydligast ses detta hos gruppen förstakalvare.

Bakgrund: Deposition av fibrillär amyloid beta 1-42 (A?) i hjärnan är ett välkänt kännetecken för den neurodegenerativa sjukdomen Alzheimer?s (AD). Dessa ansamlingar påverkar pericyter, en celltyp involverad i blodkärlsfunktion och upprätthållande av blodhjärnbarriären (BBB). Pericyter uttrycker både receptorn low density lipoprotein receptor related protein 1 (LRP-1) till vilken A?1-42 binder, och proteoglykanet NG2.

Ticks and the diseases they transmit are of major importance throughout the world. In Uganda, cattle are the most important livestock from an economic point of view. Livestock keepers fear bi-directional transmission of tick-borne pathogens between their livestock and wild animals. This cross-sectional study was conducted to establish and compare the sero-prevalence of the tick-borne pathogen Babesia bigemina among randomly selected Ankole Long-horned cattle and European crossbred cattle on 30 farms in Kiruhura district, in two sub-counties near Lake Mburo National Park in South-western Uganda. Half of the farms were situated in close proximity to the park and thereby housed cattle with more frequent wildlife-livestock interface (Sanga), whereas the other half had less frequent contact (Kikatsi).

Measurement of plasma concentrations of natriuretic peptides have been suggested to be of diagnostic and prognostic value in canine cardiac disease. In several previous canine studies, however, a considerable overlap between investigated groups has been identified. A reliable natriuretic peptide test for use in clinical practice requires establishment of reference values for natriuretic peptides in healthy dogs and cut-off values for subclinical disease as well as for clinical signs of congestive heart failure. Numerous physiological, pathological and pharmacological factors, aside heart function, may influence concentration of natriuretic peptides. A potential effect of dog breed on natriuretic peptide concentration has been suggested but has, to our knowledge, not previously been specifically studied.

The aim of this thesis is to describe and analyze the geographical distribution of everyday criminality in the town of Borlänge during the year 2002 and to analyze which measures to be taken in the physical social planning to decrease this everyday criminality there. The term everyday criminality is here to be understood as those categories of crime that appear most frequently in the records of reports to the police every year. Here two kinds of crime have been in focus, thefts from cars and office burglary.In fulfilling this aim two main questions have been answered. The first one is how the everyday criminality was distributed geographically in the town of Borlänge during the year 2002. The second one is which measures to be taken in the physical social planning to decrease this everyday criminality in the town of Borlänge.In order to answer the first question a spatial autocorrelation analysis, Local Moran LISA has been used.

This study was a degree in Master of Science in agriculture with specialization in animal science for the Department of animal nutrition and management at SLU. The subject was created by AS-Faktor, a small company for science and development within the company Lantmännen AB. It was a test of the effect of SPC (Special Processed Cereals) on induction of the endogenous protein AF (an antisecretory factor) in plasma and intestinal lumen in broilers. Previous results have shown positive effects on different intestinal diseases in pigs, horses, dogs as well as in humans. Beside the induction we also studied the effects on results in a conventional slaughter chicken production, including the ability of SPC to compete with or be affected by the coccidiostat, Salinomax.When diarrhoea occurs, it's because there is an imbalance between the secretion and the absorption and it can be caused by for example toxins.

Husqvarna AB operates two warehouses located in the area of Jönköping. The most important task is to manage the large volume fluctuations during the peak season. African swine fever (ASF) is a lethal disease of domestic pigs often characterized by haemorrhagic fever and with mortality rates up to 100%. The disease is endemic in most sub-Saharan countries and since 2007 in the Russian Federation and Caucasus area.

Mammalieceller är de som är lämpligast att använda som uttryckssystem för terapeutiska glykoproteiner tänkta för humant bruk. Detta eftersom de innehåller de organeller och enzym som krävs för att erhålla korrekt proteinkonformation och utföra avancerade posttranslationella modifikationer.
