Surveillance of Geomyces destructans in Swedish bats and Bat Hibernacula
White-Nose Syndrome, WNS, is an emerging fungal disease in the Northern American bat population causing mass mortality in infected hibernacula. Geomyces destructans is a newly discovered psychrophilic fungus causing WNS but the pathogenesis and epidemiology of the disease is not yet fully clarified. Geomyces destructans has been found in Europe but has not been a cause of mass mortality there. This study is the first investigation done to see if G. destructans is present in Sweden.
Nipahvirus : patologi hos en nyupptäckt zoonos
Nipahvirus is most likely spread from Bats to other species and causes lethal encephalitis in humans and respiratory illness in pigs. Different species are affected with varying severity but it seems to have an unprecedented zoonotic capacity and the humans affected either die or receive permanent brain damage. Full recovery is possible but very uncommon. Pigs that live and are bread in the areas that these Bats frequent are constantly in danger of contracting pneumonias and meningitis and they can spread the virus further on to the people who work with the pigs and process their carcasses. These workers could then infect other humans in their immediate surroundings, their families for instance.
Minor fieled study - molecular epidemiologi of rabies in Sao Paulo state and Minas Gerais state, Brazil
Rabies is a fatal zoonotic disease spread worldwide. The most common sources of infection
for all animals and humans are bites from dogs or Bats. The aim of this degree project was to
diagnose and determine the source of infection for 11 rabies samples from São Paulo State
and Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Diagnosis was made through direct immunofluorescence
assay, mouse inoculation and RT-PCR. The sources of infection were determined by
sequencing 234 nucleotides of the 5? end of the N-gene and align these with homologous
sequences retrieved from GenBank.
Jätteträd ? inventering, bevaring, skötsel samt rekrytering :
During the summer of 2007 I was employed by Högestad Christinehofs Förvaltning AB. My
main task was to make an inventory of giant trees at the estate. Högestad and Christinehof, which with their total possession of 13 000 ha of land is the biggest estate in Scania.
A giant tree is a tree with a diameter in breast height more then 1 meter. Trees of these
dimensions are registered by Swedish authorities. Landowners with a giant tree on their
property can receive a subsidy for cutting trees that are in competition with the giant tree.(Levenskog, 2007)
Giant trees are important for biodiversity in the landscape and there are important habitats for different insects, birds, Bats, lichens and funguses.
Urban vindkraft : Vindkraftsprojekt Järvafältet & vindkraft i Sverige
Wind power is an energy source that is becoming increasingly popular in Sweden and around the world. The establishment of large wind farms supply and contributes to energy production within grid in search of a more sustainable energy production. Wind power is becoming more popular and opens up new areas of implementation. More cities are starting to use small-scale urban wind power, everything from full-scale work for a little less work adapted to the villas. Sweden has high goals regarding the production of green electricity and the work which deals with the conditions Sweden plays in achieving those goals.
