With ever-increasing environmental problems in the world, I have with this thesis aimed at studying how the Inuit people of the Arctic organize themselves around the issue of environmental degradation. In focus for this thesis is the organization Inuit Circumpolar Conference (ICC), an NGO that focuses on saving and protecting the social and cultural rights of the Inuit people, along with the environment in the four Arctic regions. This aboriginal population has a strong connection to the environment they dwell in, as the area serves as a source of income and nutrition as well as an historically important place for their culture.I will in this thesis primarily investigate the methods of operation amongst NGOs, as well as their ability to influence and interact with the UN. These are three concepts that I, as a hypothesis, considered to distinguish ICC from other NGOs. With help from three theories about NGOs, I conclude that certain central elements of ICC differ from the average NGO, making ICC a new kind of actor in global politics..

Examensarbetet undersöker hur och varför geografilärare på gymnasiet tar upp frågor om region och regional identitet i allmänhet, och i synnerhet med koppling till Öresundsregionen. Kvalitativa intervjuer genomfördes med fem pedagoger. Resultatet från undersökningen visar att begreppet region används i stor utsträckning i undervisningen. Regional identitet används däremot inte i lika stor utsträckning som begrepp men finns med som innebörd. Undersökningen visar även att pedagogerna är väl medvetna om elevers vardag och hur de använder sig av den.

I ett samhälle där nyskapande teknik och goda kommunikationsmöjligheter gör marknader globala blir kvalitetsutveckling ett allt mer utbrett verktyg för företag att skapa sig konkurrensfördelar. Det har visat sig att stora summor pengar spenderas för att åtgärda fel och brister som uppstår på grund av bristande kvalitet. En nyligen genomförd opinionsmätning bland svenska företagsledare visar att dessa i genomsnitt bedömer dessa till närmare 25 procent av sina verksamheters omsättningar. Att kartlägga dessa så kallade kvalitetsbristkostnader kan således vara en guldgruva för verksamheter som kan förbättra sin lönsamhet utan att det sker på bekostnad av kvaliteten. Det här projektet har genomförts på Arctic Solar AB som i dagsläget har liten eller ingen kunskap över vilka kvalitetsbristkostnader som finns eller hur stor omfattning dessa har.

Assessment of impacts on nature and reindeer husbandry by the considered mountain road between Borgafjäll and Saxnäs- Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institutes method for assessment of damage to heritage assetsThere are plans regarding the building of a new road from Borgafjäll/Båtas to Saxnäs, and two road alternatives have been presented. The road has been localized to an area which is protected as a nature reserve and listed as a Nature 2000 area. This report aims to determine the effects on the Nature 2000 area and reindeer husbandry, and to be a source of knowledge for future environmental impact assessment in that project. In order to assess the impact on nature values and reindeer husbandry a method from the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI) has been used. A literature review has been made to prescribe the effects and consequences.

The Arctic region appears as a pristine remote environment, yet there is increasing evidence that it is greatly impacted by pollution such as lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg). In this environment deposition of Hg has increased threefold since the last industrial revolution. In this study five cryosolic soil profiles within non-sorted circles (NSC) in the Abisko region, northwest of Sweden, has been analyzed to improve our understanding regarding how pollutants are distributed within such type of soil. The soil samples have been analyzed with the use of X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF), for the measurements of the total concentrations of e.g. lead (Pb) and zirconium (Zr).

I have studied how human networks can affect decision-making and different constellations. The primary purpose is to clarify the possibility to affect the decision to move the infrastructure investments from Region Skåne to Region Västra Götaland. The study starts at the EU-level and continues to the Government and on to the region. Region Skåne is studied especially since it was from there the infrastructure investments were moved.The conclusion is that there is no specific representation in the government that represents regional topics, in spite of the fact that almost 30% of the members of the Parliament come from these regions. There is no discussion between the members that could be considered a networking-activity beneficial for the regions.

This thesis investigates the 200 year old phenomena of savings banks and if they increase the economic growth (GDP) in the local region they act in. That is being done by testing three hypotheses; the savings banks increase the attractiveness of the region they act in; the savings banks increase the entrepreneurship in the region they act in; and the savings banks increase the economic growth in region they act in. This quantitative cross-sectional study with data from the year 2010, finds that the savings banks increase the attractiveness of the local region, most likely through the efforts and financials they put into different local projects. A positive result is also found for increased entrepreneurship in the regions that have a local savings bank. The result is explained by the savings banks relationship lending, which increase the likeliness for a company to get the credit they need to start and develop.

Quality Control is a term often used within production and is referring to managing processes so they produce capable products. Within Quality Control, process capability index is a common measure to oversee processes. Safety Region Plots were introduced to do this graphically. In Albing & Vännman (2010) the concept of Safety Region Plots is expanded to incorporate an elliptical shape. The method of Elliptical Safety Region Plots assumes a normally distributed data.

Region Skåne skapades för tio år sedan med ändamålet att förstärka den regionala demokratin. Den här uppsatsen syftar till att studera hur pass långt Region Skåne kommit i den demokratiska utvecklingen. Utifrån en normativ analys diskuteras de tre demokratiidealen, valdemokrati, deltagardemokrati och samtalsdemokrati, som alla bör ingå för att kunna göra en demokratisk bedömning. De tre demokratiidealen omsätts i mät- och undersökningsmetoder för att i uppsatsens empiriska del kunna studera Region Skånes demokrati. Utifrån de fastställda mät och undersökningsmetoderna dras slutsatsen att Region Skåne inte till fullo uppnår något av demokratiidealen, och att organisationen fortfarande innehar flera demokratiska brister som bör förbättras, detta trots att demokratin inom regionen utvecklas och att regionen sedan dess skapande fört med sig flera demokratiska fördelar..

Syftet med studien är att studera hur ett kvalitativt turistiskt boende kan utformas utifrån ett upplevelseperspektiv. För att besvara studiens frågeställningar valde jag att utföra en kvalitativ undersökning i form av fem djupintervjuer. Tre av intervjuobjekten representerar turism och besöksnäringen i Sverige på tre olika nivåer - nationell, regional samt lokal. Detta för att få en bild av Sverige som destination samt en inblick i vad som händer på marknaden. De två övriga representerar hotellnäringen inom Swedish Lapland.

Syftet med uppsatsen är att hitta och analysera argumenten som användes i debatten angående den regionala försöksverksamheten i Sverige samt undersöka deras validitet rent rationellt. Den har även som syfte att hitta och jämföra argumenten i debatten om Skåne som region och Västra Götaland som region. I bakgrunden redovisas begreppet region och även hur de regionala frågorna växte fram i Sverige och Skåne. Teorin som används för att undersöka om argumentationen är rationell är modellen The Rational Actor. Undersökningen bygger på en argumentationsanalys där argumenten är strukturerade i Pro- respektive Contra-argument.

Studien behandlar försöksverksamheten Region Skåne och deras kommunikation och information via texter om verksamheten till beslutsfattare och medborgare. Texterna ligger till grund för beslutet om fortsatt försöksverksamhet och påverkar även allmänheten. Genom en narrativanalys har vi urskiljt fyra teman; ?Permanenta självstyrelsen!?, ?Region Skåne är positivt och en nydanande föregångare?, ?Införandet av regioner är en naturlig och logisk utveckling?, och ?Region Skåne är konkurrenskraftigt och bidrar till tillväxt?. I dessa narrativa teman använder regionen övertalningsdiskurs och myter, men även grepp som dramatisering och iscensättande.

Environmental chemicals are transported to the Arctic through the air and oceans, once within the Arctic they spread through rivers, lakes and other watercourses. Polar bears and sledge dogs in-gest high concentrations of environmental chemicals since many of the chemicals are fat-soluble and their diet mainly consists of marine mammals. The aim of this study is to describe how environmental chemicals spread in nature, how they reach the polar bears, and finally how they affect the animals reproduction, with reproductive hormones and genitals in focus. The animals are exposed to a cocktail effect which complicates the assessment of the chemicals impact on the reproduction. Studies show that the genitals can decrease in size or become malformed, sexual maturation can be affected and the reproductive hormones can be disturbed.

Region Gotland har under en längre tid privatiserat tjänster som tidigare utfördes av Region Gotland själva. Hur går det till när en privat aktör tar över eller startar en verksamhet och hur ser kraven på verksamheten ut? Idag använder Region Gotland Balanserade styrkort i sin styrning och hur påverkar denna typ av styrning privata aktörer? Denna uppsats fokuserar på vilken effekt Socialnämndens styrning har på upphandling, kommunikation och uppföljning.Problemformuleringen i denna uppsats lyder: På vilket sätt styr Socialnämnden privata och offentliga aktörer inom särskilt boend epå Gotland.Syftet med denna rapport är att undersöka hurvida Region Gotlands styrmodell påverkar upphandling, kommunikation och uppföljning mellan Region Gotland och aktörer inom särskilt boende på Gotland.Intervjuer har gjorts med personer i nyckelpositioner inom Region Gotland. Fördjupade intervjuer har gjorts med verksamhetschefer på två olika boenden. Ett boende i privat regi och ett boende i offentlig regi.

Prescribed burning was commonly used for site preparation in Sweden to establish new forests until the 1960?s, when mechanical scarification was introduced. During recent decades the interest in prescribed burnings has increased again, mainly due to certifications of forestry stating that 5% of the regeneration areas should be burned on dry and mesic soils. The objective of the study was to evaluate actual influence of prescribed burning compared to other site preparation on stand stem density, growth parameters and tree damages for Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) after direct seeding and planting. The study also attempts to simulate growth until first thinning.
