It may seem obvious that the urban space in our northern cities should be design to function and inspire throughout the whole year. This is not always the case. The urban space is often designed on a summer basis and the winter is regarded more as a problem then a resource and its potential remain unused. I have in this master thesis studied the impact of the winter on people and spaces and ponder on how to design functional and attractive places for winter. The project ends in a design concept for Broparken in Umeå on the theme "everyday winter day". The work with this thesis has given me, as a landscape Architect, valuable experiences and filled a gap of knowledge that I had in this subject. I hope that this thesis can inspire Umeå kommun and others who are interested in how northern cities can benefit by its climate and develop towards a more complete city. The thesis begins with a chapter that present the subject from four different perspectives.

3D modeling is a common tool in landscape Architecture. Today, there have been new ways in which virtual 3D models are successful tools in the dialogue with the public. These new methods involve children and young people who are groups that is hard to reach and engage in citizen dialogues. The purpose of this work was to investigate how a virtual 3D model works in the landscape Architect?s communication with the public through the project Gruvstadsparken in Kiruna. Through workshops, I wanted to communicate Gruvstadsparken to get ideas from participants on how the park can be used and be revisited.

Det offentliga rummet : trender & tendenser

?What is happening with open public space?? and ?Why is it happening now?? are the twooverarching questions in this master thesis. In the essay the concept of ?offentligt rum? (openpublic space) is defined as an exterior place accessible to the general public, such as squares, parks and streets. I have, based on the issues, identified the trends and tendencies of openpublic space in Sweden. The study consists of three sections.

Urbana utväxter : konsumtionskoncentrat

The shopping mall is a reflection of the city and its habitants, a concentrate of the modern city. I have studied the dialogues of malls and the communication within, how malls are put together and what they communicate. The city is constantly changing. As soon as we try to grasp the city, it slips away. My opinion is that city planners and landscape Architects need to widen their views. City planning needs to develop to better fit to the changes of our modern cities.

The sun is a huge energy source with great potential of providing energy to the heating of homes and other buildings in an environmentally sustainable manner. In order to provide buildings with energy from the sun it is necessary to transfer the energy supply over time to when the demand arises. By storing the heat in a seasonal storage, solar energy from the summer can be used in the winter when the demand for heating is greatest.Today's existing plants are mainly in Europe and particularly in Germany. These facilities are designed to supply heat demands greater than 400 MWh and covers about 40-50 % of this need which consists of energy for space heating and domestic hot water. How much of the heat demand that is covered, the solar fraction, is partly due to losses from the storage which in turn is connected to the surface area of the storage.

Durban, South Africa?s third-largest city is a socially segregated post apartheid society, struggling with high unemployment and AIDS. The city becomes even more complex with a changing climate, creating an influx of people to the city, putting scarce resources under further stress. Warwick Junction, an important transport hub in the centre of Durban, holds a large site of informal trading alongside the formal markets. This informal sector generates large financial flows and provides for a rapidly growing population. The aim of this thesis is to develop an approach that is realistic and relevant to planning and design of an urban context in South Africa.

Vegetationsbekämpning i dräneringsdiken inom ett järnvägsområde i Västra Götalandsregionen

My purpose with this thesis has been tostudy the intersection between LandscapeArchitecture and Land Art. They both relateto the landscape in some way whetherit is to the urban landscape or thenatural landscape. What tangent points are there betweenthese two subjects, and can you learnsomething of the artists approach to thelandscape?Land Art is an art movement that began inthe late 60?s, what links are there to thecurrent landscape?Last summer, I travelled around the U.S.for a month and visited the three classicLand Art projects. Lightning Field in NewMexico, by Walter De Maria, Sun Tunnels inUtah, by Nancy Holt and the Spiral Jetty, also in Utah, by Robert Smithson. The sites where visited from half a day upto 24 hours and was described and analyzedwith text and photographs. To visit these sites has been crucial formy thesis and will affect my future workas a landscape Architect. The use of themethod has been a thought of mine for along time, particularly to analyze ordescribe a landscape with images.

?Architecture has always required representation. Architects have ideas, and ideas must be visualized and communicated. Models are one of the Architect's tools.?

Use of lighting is crucial to make public urban places available during dark hours. Landscape Architects participate in planning of lighting, but during our education there is very little taught on the subject. Through this study we approach the subject of lighting by looking into lighting methods for urban plant materials during winter. In this thesis we look into ways to emphasize the visible characters and experiences of urban plants during winter season using light. Target audience are landscape Architect students and landscape Architects without knowledge of lighting. The part of the thesis that describe basic conditions for, and visual characters of plants can be useful to lighting designers without knowledge in this subject. Working methods used were the following: ? Pre-study about light and lighting techniques through literature and dialogues. ? Compiling important visual winter plant characters through photography and literature. ? Outdoor light experiments with plants.

Fler mötesplatser i våra utemiljöer ? en länk i arbetet med ökad integration i Malmö?

I have in this essay, studied both the definition of the concepts segregation and integration and how you as an urban planner can promote integration, by working with increased feeling of security and more venues. The aim is to cast light on these two tools and how you within city planning can use them to create a more equal society. To gain a wide base of knowledge, I have studied both government and municipal reports as well as prior investigations where these methods have been used. I have also interviewed a landscape Architect who actively works with questions regarding integration in Malmö, to get information as recent as possible about their work today. Malmö is today a segregated city with large gaps between the residential areas when it comes to economic possibilities and the composition of inhabitants.

The title of the final thesis is Filmic landscapes ? film as representation, tool and practice in landscape Architecture. The aim of the final thesis is to investigate how film as a medium can be used to describe, interpret and manipulate the understanding of a place and its design. What kind of aspects of landscape Architecture can film as a medium in a design-process emphasize or create? How can filming, as a self-standing act, contribute to the understanding of the landscape and a landscape-related design-process? The thesis is divided into two parts, one theoretical part that consists of an essay, and one practical part that consists of a 11minute long filmic reflection of the ?Glass-houses?in Kosta, Sweden, created by the Swedish designer and Architect Bruno Mathsson.

Hur tillgänglig är staden? : fallstudie av Kungsgatan och Föreningsgatan i Malmö

How accessible is the city? Is there more factors than merely the strictly physical that affect how accessible the city is perceived? These questions are the starting point of this study. The greatest emphasis, in this study, is placed on the perceived parameters that affect us humans when we move in our cities. Experiences and internal images can change our behaviour and prevent free movement in the city. The result from this study shows that a city can not be seen as fully accessible unless both the physical and the perceived accessibility are fulfilled.

Wetland development in the context of ecotourism : a conceptual design proposal for a wetland site in Lake Victoria, Kenya

The travelling sector is expanding worldwide, which puts all destinations under pressure to have a functioning social system and good resources to manage the problems and take advantage of the opportunities that the tourism sector can offer a community. The area around Kisumu in Kenya, like much of Africa, tourism can simultaneously ensure a stable financial future while it removes, as a result of a growing population, more and more of the scenery that many tourists want to experience. Responsible travel to natural areas that promotes conservation of the environment and improves the welfare of local people is what defines ecotourism. A concept that implies a closed cycle, where visitor?s needs are met in balance with what can be given back, without risking creating imbalances in society. Along the coast of Lake Victoria, valuable papyrus wetlands provide Kisumu vital ecosystem services such as water purification, climate adaptation while it also serves as a reservoir for biodiversity.
