?What is happening with open public space?? and ?Why is it happening now?? are the twooverarching questions in this master thesis. In the essay the concept of ?offentligt rum? (openpublic space) is defined as an exterior place accessible to the general public, such as squares,parks and streets. I have, based on the issues, identified the trends and tendencies of openpublic space in Sweden.The study consists of three sections. The first one is the most comprehensive and consistsof a text study. Texts were studied from Boverket (The national Board of Housing, Buildingand Planning), Movium (Centre for the Urban Public Space at the Swedish University ofAgricultural Sciences) and the Swedish journals Arkitektur, Arkitekten and Plan. The studiedtexts were published from 2007 to 2010.The second part consists of two interviews. Both the interviewees work with public space on adaily basis.The third part is an indepth look into the city of Malmö with public space and consists of aninterview with a landscape architect at the municipality.The studied texts are presented in the essay in six identified topics. The trends and tendencies ofthe open public space have been expressed within these topics.A discussion based on the text study and the three interviews then follows, which explorescomprehensive trends and tendencies of the open public space. The question ?Why is ithappening now?? is also discussed based on the three interviews.?Vad händer med det offentliga rummet?? och ?Varför händer det just nu?? är de tvåövergripande frågorna i det här examensarbetet. Med begreppet offentligt rum avses enexteriör plats tillgänglig för allmänheten, till exempel torg, parker och gaturum. Utifrånfrågeställningarna har trender och tendenser identifierats för det offentliga rummet istadsplaneringssammanhang i Sverige.Studien består av tre delar. Den första är den mest omfattande och består av en textstudie.Material som studerats kommer från Boverket (Myndigheten för planering, byggande ochboende), Movium (Centrum för stadens utemiljö på SLU) och tidskrifterna Arkitektur,Arkitekten och Plan. Den studerade tidsperioden sträcker sig från 2007 till 2010.Den andra delen består av intervjuer med två personer som har det offentliga rummet somarbetsfält.Den tredje delen är en fördjupning i Malmö stads arbete med det offentliga rummet och bestårav en intervju med en landskapsarkitekt på kommunen.I uppsatsen presenteras de studerade texterna utifrån sex identifierade temaområden.Temaområdena kan beskrivas som aspekter där det som händer med det offentliga rummetgivits uttryck.Utifrån textstudien och de tre intervjuerna förs en diskussion om övergripande trender ochtendenser för det offentliga rummet. Vidare förs ett resonemang utifrån de tre intervjuerna omvarför det som händer sker just nu.
