The purpose of this scientific essay is to evaluate if a continuous glucose monitoring system is something that can benefit Swedish animal health care. The study investigates if it is medically possible to use continuous glucose monitoring systems on dogs with an apparatus attached to their bodies. Furthermore, I try to establish whether this is possible in practice and how it could be done. The keywords used were diabetes mellitus, insulin, continuous glucose monitoring, blood glucose monitoring, dog, pet owner and animal nursing care. Furthermore, I wanted to find out if this system could be an alternative to currently established methods to measure the patient?s blood glucose level.

A patient simulator for testing Anaesthesia machines has been developed at Maquet Critical Care AB, to reduce costly and time-consuming experiments on animals. The device simulates human lungs regarding lung dynamics and volume, uptake of anaesthetic agents and the production of carbon dioxide, heat and moisture. Further demands on the simulator are durability and size; the device shall be compact enough to be moveable.The resulting simulator fulfils the requirements and enables better repeatability and ability to test extreme cases than experiments on animals do.Uptake of the anaesthetic agent is achieved in a active carbon filter and controlled by regulating the flow. The flow is created by a regenerative blower and controlled using a proportional valve. The uptake can be set by the user or by a simple uptake model modified to recursively handle changes in the concentration of anaesthetic agent.Carbon dioxide is fed into the system from a tank by a mass flow regulator.

Bakgrund: Kroniskt obstruktiv lungsjukdom (KOL) är den fjärde vanligaste dödsorsaken i världen och beräknas öka i omfattning. Det är en irreversibel sjukdom som förvärras med tiden och som innebär att lungorna får svårare att ta upp syre. Rökning är den främsta orsaken att drabbas av KOL, vilket gör rökstopp till den viktigaste åtgärden för att begränsa sjukdomens förlopp. Trots det fortsätter många att röka efter att de har fått sin diagnos. Syfte: Syftet med litteraturstudien var att belysa patienters erfarenheter av att röka vid KOL.

Vid all vård av patienter ska patientjournal föras. Anestesisjuksköterskan ska både muntligen och skriftligen rapportera, dokumentera och utvärdera den perioperativa vården. Sedering har lugnande effekt, ökar acceptansen av obehag och ger viss amnesi.

The country also has a heavy burden of free roaming dogs, mainly because of the high amount of edible waste in the streets, which are the main hosts for the disease. Therefore to truly extinguish rabies, the main focus should be on the dogs, both stray dogs and owned. One method is to vaccinate all dogs against rabies.

The mouse (Mus musculus) is the most commonly used mammal in biomedical research and can easily be restrained by both hand and by a device. Restraining animals causes stress that not only decreases the animal?s wellbeing, but may also influence the research results. The first aim of this study was to train mice to voluntarily stand still using positive reinforcement training. Another benefit of teaching a mouse to stand still is that you can avoid Anaesthesia for some procedures.
