Äldres resande i vardagen - Möjligheter, begränsningar och inställning till hållbara stadsvisioner

Everyday life mobility of elderly people ? opportunities, restrictions and sustainable urban visions aim to examine and describe elderly people?s movement patterns, their opportunities and restrictions of reaching high mobility and accessibility, and their attitude towards various sustainable urban visions. This paper is based on an approach of time-space geography as it covers the topic of movements in time-space, explained and developed using the concepts of mobility and accessibility. To examine elderly people?s attitude towards sustainable urban visions, this paper also takes approach on theories such as New Urbanism, mixed-use and the compact city. The method used in the study is an interweaving of a time geographic diary and qualitative interviews, where the respondents are six retired people between 68 and 77 years old living in Gothenburg city. The collected material has been qualitatively analysed and compiled to identify recurrent and unique opinions of the respondents, and can therefore not be generalised to the entire elderly population. The study aims to highlight possible patterns and opinions among the elderly. The results show that the respondents are of many different opinions and emphasises different themes. It is however possible to distinguish different types of motion. The car and public transport serves as a base for most respondent?s everyday lives, although supplemented by other means of transport. The most common reasons for mobility are leisure activities, excursions, social interaction, and matters such as food shopping and visit to social service functions. The respondent?s perceived opportunities and constraints are not, as one might think, determined by the individual?s physical condition, but depend mainly on personal preferences, fluidity and utility. The attitude towards a compact city with mixed-use is diverse. The idea of a compact city with mixed-use was generally well received but the attitude towards its implementation was less accommodating, due to the changes in the respondent?s everyday lives that it would imply. The attitude towards a car-free city was mostly negative, with the exception of a few people who currently rely entirely on public transport.
