The flow of information in road vehicles intensifies as new techniques develop. Informationsources such as cell phones, navigation equipment and radios demand the driver?s attentionwhile he or she must stay focused on the road to perform a safe driving. Today the visualinformation inside the vehicle is mostly located on the dashboard, which forces the driver tolook down when shifting attention between the environment outside and the informationinside the vehicle. One way to avoid this is to useHead-up Display (HUD), a technique thatprojects information in the visual field of the user.This master thesis has been performed in cooperation with Scania CV AB, a world leadingtruck producer. The purpose of the thesis has been to develop a concept of HUD from a usercentred perspective and thereby increasing safety and giving the driver a more positivedriving experience.A thorough study of theory, a benchmarking and a user study were carried out to gainknowledge about human cognitive conditions, existing solutions on the market, and the actualdemands of drivers. The starting-point of this project was to optimize a solution that adapts tothe user situation and demands. Based on the knowledge gained, a number of concepts weredeveloped and tried out on professional drivers in a simulator. The design process wasiterative and was repeated until a final concept was developed.This thesis shows that HUD can improve the visual management significantly. Theparticipants in the simulator tests were positive about the technique and their suggestions ofchoice of information and layout were implemented to a high degree in the final concept.Previous studies indicate that a correctly designed HUD reduces reaction time, increases thesubjective experience of the driver, improves driving performance and enables dividedattention between the environment outside and the information inside the vehicle. Therebymental resources can be focused on the primary task, the driving. According to this pre-study,HUD in trucks has great potential in improving the visual management and thereby improvingboth the security and the driving experience.
