Companies worldwide strive to reduce costs and capital tied up in stock. At the same time, the need for short delivery times requires efficient logistic flows. In order to meet customer demands an efficient warehouse activity is required.The purpose of this study is to develop a model for designing a warehouse system regarding to working environment and safety. The model is primarily designed and based on literature reviews of scientific articles and books, own knowledge and the authors previous work experience in the industry.The thesis has been done at Sandvik AB, the department Precision strip in Sandviken. Sandvik is a high-technology engineering group with advanced products and a world-leading positions within selected areas. Sandvik is constantly working to improve and streamline the processes and the assignment therefore was to design a warehouse layout to streamline and improve stocking of steel strips.The result presented in this work is a general model for designing a warehouse system regarding to working environment and safety. In the model there are six main areas presented and a number of basic conditions and requirements that must be identified before the six main areas can be applied. These areas are: Storage methods, storage assignments, vehicles for transportation, planning and administration and layout design. Working environment and safety should be integrated in all major areas. In each main area there are a number of factors presented that will serve as support during the decision process. The model has been used in this study as a base for the design of a warehouse system at Sandvik and it resulted in three different layout proposals. Furthermore, the model has also been tested at Sandvik using a Workshop with a successful outcome.The conclusions that can be drawn are that the design of a warehouse system is affected by many factors. These may include the type of products to be stocked and the kind of warehouse system that will be designed. Moreover strategic decisions must be made with accuracy within the six main areas that are presented in the model.
