Speaking English

dess bidrag till kunskap i engelska för
elever i läs- och skrivsvårigheter

The aim of this study was to describe and analyze if and in that case how project Speaking English contributes to improved skills in English to pupils in reading and writing difficulties. The project started out in order to give pupils in reading and writing difficulties an alternative to the regular English teaching. The study was carried out in two nine-year compulsory schools. We have conducted interviews with both teachers and pupils to see what they think about the project. According to the teachers we interviewed Speaking English contribute to improved skills for the pupils and they also believe that their chances to pass the 9th grade will increase. The result also indicates that oral teaching is a good working method for these children. This teaching also motivates these pupils in their language learning. Furthermore the result shows that Speaking English can be carried out both in a whole class and in a small group depending on the pupil?s requirement and needs. Criticism can be levelled against the fact that when such a great focus of attention is put on the oral communication the result can be that the pupils loose one way of communication, in this case writing. A period of acclimatisation can be required both of pupils and teachers when the method Speaking English is introduced and especially this is important for pupils who has got used to the traditional way of teaching English. It is the same with the teachers. The whole picture of the project Speaking English is positive although there are some critical voices.
