Socialt och emotionellt lärande i skolan. En litteraturbaserad studie över effekter och evidensgrad

Background: Mental health problems among children and adolescents have increased. The school is an important arena for prevention of mental health problems. There is a huge demand for successful interventions. SEL is a method that aims to increase the social and emotional competence among children and adolescents. The program SET applies this method. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore the effects of the SEL method. Also to explore key factors for a successful implementation and obstacles that can arise. Method: A literature-based study which included 13 articles was performed. Results: The study showed many positive preventive effects of SEL for social competence and mental health among children and adolescents. The key factors that were identified as successful were manual-based programs where the implementer followed the set out in the manual. The examination of the SET-programs grade of evidence showed limitations in the evidence since only two evaluations had been carried out. Discussion/conclusions: The findings partly confirmed previous knowledge that SEL can prevent mental health problems among children and adolescents. The strongest effect seemed to be on externalized problems which are risk factors for mental problems. For further use of the SET program additional studies need to be carried out.
