Digital artefacts such as smartphones have become an intricate part of our daily lives both private and professionally. They have evolved from doing simple tasks to become a form of expression, as well as acting as a gateway to the digital world of connections. We rely on various technology such as Wi-Fi networks to connect with others. They in turn have become more available and today, many establishments offer free network to their customers. With these developments comes different kind of risks for the user. Wi-Fi enabled devices are broadcasting their MAC-address along with information of previously connected networks. These digital traces can sometimes even be connected to physical locations such as a home address. This means that a user can be tracked and profiled only based on information gathered in couple of minutes. In this study we have gathered the leaking information from digital artefacts and studying them further. Our study shows how digital artefacts are making us into public users. In this case study we have three different observations. The gathered data has then been analysed to see what sort of information can be gathered, what kind of patterns can be seen and what sort of connections can be made. The aim of this paper is to create a greater awareness and to give recommendations to users in what sort of measures they can take in order to protect their privacy. In our results, we have been successful in profiling users based on their digital traces by seeing where they have been. In some cases, we have also been successful in identifying a person and their home address. With these results, we discuss what it means for a user to become known in such unknown way. But also what it means for the relationship between a user and their digital artefact, and suggest a new way to visualize it. In this study we have also been presented with various challenges, and with it we expose the tension that exists between an individual and a user. We conclude in our study by few measurement that can be taken to prevent unwanted information leakage.
