När skötaren leder läraren

The leadership within healthcare is a constantly discussed subject. The discussion today is evolving around the physicians' lack of strive towards becoming managers within healthcare organizations. Furthermore the leadership that the nurse practice when becoming manager is on the other hand not discussed. The purpose of this study is to describe important factors of the leadership the nurse practice upon physicians in a healthcare organization as well as to explain why that is. To fulfill this purpose, we have used a qualitative case study research design including a private Swedish healthcare company. The study determines that there seemingly are three different factors the managing nurse should take into account when leading physicians. In this study we have concluded that they are communication, being out on the operating floor and the opportunity to have someone to share best practices with. Additionally, the study shows that there seem to be a connection between the aspects determined in the study and the existing corporate culture. Finally, we discuss the implications of our results and claim that managing nurses seem to have found a workaround when accepting the corporate culture as given and still manage to lead their care unit.
