Mobility Management

Mobility Management is about affecting and changing the demand of mobility. It?s not about what traditional planning?s been focused on; to supply for the demand. The demand of mobility is created by us humans since the traffic exists of us. That means that Mobility Management is about changing our needs. In one part it?s about changing our needs to travel, but primarily about changing our demands when choosing the way of travel. The concept originally came from the US, where it emerged during the oil crisis in 1972. During the crisis the employers had to create car-pools to enable the employees to get to their work. In that way the employers changed the employee?s way of travel.
The concept spread from the US to the Netherlands and countries like Germany and Great Britain before it reached Sweden during the 1990?s last years. This means that Mobility Management is a young concept, which is not well known among the general public. Two towns in Sweden were early in adapting the concept, Lund and Karlstad, and they?re now looked upon as forerunners. The EU has supported a number of projects focused on the concept and in 1999 a network called EPOMM, European Platform on Mobility Management, were created. The network gathers people interested in the subject and is accessible for everyone.
To change our ways of travel, which most of all purports that we trade the car trip for biking, walking and public transport, carry on a lot of effects. For example: people?s health gets better when they start using the bike or when they begin to walk, less money need to be spent on infrastructure and the environment and climate gets better when the emissions from the cars declines. The environmental aspect also indicates that Mobility Management can be one of many ways that together brings us closer to the sustainable society.
The purpose with the thesis has been to get a greater knowledge about Mobility Management. What it is, where it comes from and how it has developed, what it stands for today and what it can purport tomorrow, are questions that?s been asked.
