Miljonprogrammets Rosengård

den avbildade verkligheten

The purpose of this thesis is to cast light on the residential area Rosengård in Malmö which during the years between 1965 to 1975 was part of a programme known as "Miljonprogrammet", a project which was supposed to put an end to the housing shortages. The purpose of this thesis is also to investigate the social consequences in Rosengård, which arose as a result of Miljonprogrammet. Rosengård is one of many immigrant-dense suburbs in Sweden that by the media is given an exaggerated negative portrayal. Through our work, we also want to bring out and highlight the true image of Rosengård. The questions that have served as our starting ground include; what were the thoughts behind Miljonprogrammet? What were the consequences of Miljonprogrammet? What does the true image of Rosengård look like? What can the new government do in order to improve the situation in Rosengård? In order to answer these questions, four interviews were conducted with specifically chosen people. It included a representative from the social offices of Rosengård, a representative from MKB, a representative from Moderaterna (the right-wing party of Sweden) and finally a representative from the "state building office" in Malmö. Later, through our own will and commitment, a survey was conducted at the centre of Rosengård where 102 Rosengård residents participated. To support our empirical material we have made use of relevant theories brought forward by Anthony Giddens, Emile Durkheim, August Comte, Basil Bernstein and Jürgen Habermas. Our analysis of the survey shows that despite the negative consequences such as segregation and socio-economic problems caused by Miljonprogrammet, the majority of the residents of Rosengård are content and that they have a positive disposition towards Rosengård. Despite media's negative depiction of the residential area, the habitants create a common positive and social way of life in the residential area. Our composition of the interviews shows that the new government has put forward various propositions to improve the situation in Rosengård. Some of these proposals include "Bokaler" which is the building of apartments in Törnrosen for students and also kontinentalpendeln. The combination of the two aforementioned proposals is meant to bring together Malmös different residential areas and also to attract habitants from other parts of Malmö to Rosengård. All these improvements are pursued in order to up heave the prevailing residential segregation and also the socio-economic problems existing in Rosengård.
