Lönsamhet av Självscanningssystem

During the last decade, there has been an increase in the use of technology-based self-services within the retail sector. The increase is particularly noticeable within the grocery market. The reason behind the increased use of these systems is partially due to the fact that companies within highly competitive retail markets continually look for ways of decreasing costs while upholding efficiency. The problem is that it is difficult to understand the true economical implications of investments relating to these machines. The purpose of this study is to investigate and contribute with new insights regarding the cost-structures of the stationary self-checkout systems and traditional cashier desks, within the retail grocery market. We where able to take the study forward by exploiting the cost structures gathered from a Swedish grocery retailer. The outcome and final result of the study provides a scenario-based answer as a response to the initial problem. By analyzing the scenario, we able to isolate what costs actually had a significant weight within the cost-structure relationships. By focusing on the variables of significant importance we created an equation. Our contribution is an equation that reflects a further understanding of the economical impact that these machines carry. Our conclusion and further recommendation is that retailers within the grocery market, planning on investing in these machines, should look at the economical impacts though our generated equation. The equation will bring forward the important aspects of these machines introduce key aspects that otherwise may easily be overlooked.
