This essay deals with how the development of society, the media society in particular, has an impact on the teaching of the subject of art. In the society of today, we are bombarded with more images than ever before. As an effect of this, the curriculum of 2011 emphasises the importance of the ability to orientate oneself in the modern society. Furthermore, it describes art not only as a practical subject, but also as a verbal and community-orientated subject. Because of sparse and dated research, the subject of art is in danger of marginalization as a school subject. The purpose of this study is to illustrate art teachers? conception of the aim of the subject of art. Through qualitative interviews with five art teachers, the study aims to review which areas of knowledge that are fundamental within the subject of art, as well as which abilities and qualities are of primary importance in art education according to the teachers. Furthermore, it is investigated how art teachers relate their teaching to the curriculum. Finally, in a larger perspective, the abilities and qualities are discussed in relation to what knowledge that is required within society. The results of the interviews are analyzed and compared with previous research. The results indicate that, although the creation of images is still in focus, there has been a visible development towards a new discourse where the process and communication is in focus. It emerged that teachers discuss the fundamental parts of their education in terms of creativity and autonomy. These are qualities that they aim for in their education and they envision that this reflects what modern society demands.
