? Empirisk studie av produktionsmätutrustning vid frästillverkning

This master thesis investigates quality procedures and measuring of solid carbide end mills, with the main focus on measuring equipment. The thesis has been written in collaboration with a special production department for solid carbide end mills at Sandvik Coromant in Gimo. The department?s needs and constraints have been the foundation of the project and the main research question is: how to measure end mills in order to ensure good quality of the produced end mills. The project has contained both a theoretical study consisting of a literature review and practical studies in the workshop with the objective to identify an end mill?s main parameters and the relationship between an end mill?s geometry and the manufacturing processes. The current quality processes and measuring equipment were evaluated based on several factors and the result of the evaluation indicated insufficient measuring equipment. The following steps consisted of two specifications of demand, since a need and desire of two measuring machines were initially identified, and an evaluation of new measuring equipment. The specifications of demand were divided into a machine for more extensive measuring of the end mills and a laser micrometer for quick measuring of the diameter. The evaluation of new measuring equipment was based on quotes, public information from the suppliers and meetings with the suppliers. One of the results of the study is the identification of cutting diameter, core diameter, rake angle, clearance angle 1, clearance angle 2, back taper, runout, chamfer length/ chamfer radius, helix reduction, tooth over center and width of land as the most important dimensions. The study also reached the conclusions that an optical production measuring machine and a laser micrometer are the most beneficial machines to use for set-up of a new batch and to adjust grinding parameters. The recommendation to Sandvik is to investigate Zoller pomBasic and Aeroel Meclab T40 further with some tests and compare the test results with the requirements stated in the specifications of demand. The long term strategy for the department is to complement the production measuring equipment with final inspections and documentation using their Helicheck Pro.
