Konstlandskap
ett projekt om en konsthall på Bergdala gård, Kivik
Abstract
? What is an exhibition hall?
? How do you create tension between art and
nature?
? Why should an exhibition hall be situated in the
country
side; would that add to the experience?
? What are the conditions of exhibiting
contemporary art?
These are some of the questions I first asked
myself when I came to work with this project on
an exhibition hall outside Kivik, Österlen. These
questions brought me to new places, meetings and
ideas.
The team working actively to realize this
project, calls it ?Art by the Sea?. The team has
been working with the project since 2001 . Their
vision is to create a new, internationally known
exhibition hall with ?spectacular buildings in a
grandiose landscape?, preferably overlooking the
sea. They found Bergdala farm, which corresponds
to their requirements. The architect student Anna
Belfrage and I became interested in the project
and our aim has been to produce a proposal for
buildings and landscape for this new exhibition
hall.
The site, Bergdala farm, is perched on top of a
hill. From the highest peak there is a marvellous
view of the sea. The farm comprises extensive
fields, woods and pastures, both
dense and open landscape in dramatic topography.
You can find remains from the Stone Age on the
property.
In this work the reader will follow the working
process, which starts with my early questions. I
looked for answers on study trips, in interviews
and literature. I needed to find out what a
contemporary exhibition hall can be; whether a
?beautiful? landscape really matters; how the
artists prefer to exhibit their work and what
the demands on the outside milieu are etc. The
reference studies brought me to places in the
region of Öresund and to Spain, to galleries and
studios where I interviewed people who work with
art in different ways.
The investigation results in reflections on the
different objects and interviews. I discuss in
what way they have inspired me and how I could
bring that to Bergdala. The studies helped me
to create a platform from where Anna Belfrage
and I together could establish a vision of the
activities of the exhibition hall, bearing in
mind the conditions of the site. The ideas were
developed and concretized into our mutual concept.
My process ends in a proposal where I apply this
concept on the landscape. It is a new layer on
top of the existing landscape; a directed motion,
which takes the visitor out
on an exciting walk in the landscape.
