Kognitiv träning - En litteraturstudie om dess effekt samt eventuella möjligheter inom audiologisk rehabilitering

In recent years cognitive training in order to improve cognitive abilities have becomeincreasingly popular and a lot of research has been conducted within this field. The natural agingprocess has a negative effect on many of our cognitive abilities and this relationship also has a strongconnection with hearing loss. Elderly with hearing loss is therefore a group that could benefit fromcognitive training. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate different types of cognitivetraining directed towards working memory in older adults and to examine the results observedregarding efficacy of this type of training and its transfer effect. Method: A literature reviewconsisting of 17 scientific articles published between 2005-2014. The mean age of the participantswere between 62-82 years. The articles were found via Pubmed, Scopus, PsycInfo and Cinahl andthrough the reference list of the reviewed articles. Results: The results show that cognitive trainingmayhave a positive effect in elderly people since all the participants in the studies improved on thetraining task. In a majority of the studies the cognitive ability also improved. There was no consistentevidence regarding the transfer effect. Conclusion: Elderly may benefit positively from cognitivetraining in abilities directed towards working memory, both on the trained task and the cognitiveability. To state the cause of the effect, however, is difficult as there are several different types oftraining and several different tests for evaluation. There is no consistent evidence for the transfer effect.
