Purpose:The purpose of this study is to improve the knowledge regarding how entrepreneurial companies act and behave in relation to human capital, by studying their decision-making process for human capital investments. Furthermore this study shall enrich the understandings for how their way of handling human capital investments might change over time along with the development, growth and aging of the company.Methodology:For this case study the authors have chosen a qualitative approach. The authors have collected the empirical data by interviewing the CEO?s of six different entrepreneurial companies. To be able to process and analyze the empirical data the authors have used various theoretical frameworks and also previous studies.Theoretical framework:The theoretical framework brings up human capital and its importance, but also its role in the entrepreneurial company. Furthermore venture capital and venture capitalist?s roles are connected to the human capital in entrepreneurial companies.Conclusion:A distinct change in how entrepreneurial companies invest in human capital can be observed when they grow. In the early stage of the entrepreneurial company the authors have observed that human capital investments are not as important, as long as the employees have the right drive. They obtain this drive by being given a lot of responsibility and variation in job assignments, but also by receiving ownership shares. Older entrepreneurial companies want their employees to have the right drive as well, but they will have to create this by investing more in the personnel, and by making sure they have a satisfying work environment and satisfying work assignments with responsibilities. In the end, the optimal human capital investments are about finding the right individual and thereafter give this person the tools and opportunities needed to develop the right drive.
