Abstract: Purpose: The purpose of this study is to describe the situation for independent hotels. With a thorough case study of ?The Grand Hotel in Lund? ,our intentions is to gain knowledge about the demands a hotel must keep up with in order to be a successful independent hotel, in a market dominated by chain-constellations. Methodology: An abductive method is used as the study form the basis for hypothesis. The first part of the thesis, which describes the line of business, is based primary on secondary data. The case study is based on interviews with employees as well as key persons outside the company who plays or have played an important role in history of the hotel. Conclusion: We have in our work found a hypothesis which explains how the owners strong desire to keep the hotel independent, plays a crucial part in the choice whether or not the hotel should be a member in a hotel-chain. Furthermore we have found that it takes certain resources, which will eliminate the advantages a membership in a hotel-chain will give. Our final hypothesis is that the hotel brand is the most important one among those resources. Key-words: Independent hotels, hotel-chains, entrepreneurship, resources, capabilities
