GRÖNYTEFAKTOR I ETT NYTT PERSPEKTIV - Går ekosystemtjänster att mäta med fjärranalys?

Due to an increased population in cities the need of densification of cities increases. This means that the amount of ecological elements in the city is at risk of decreasing. Ecological services contribute to the city?s climate by softening the negative impacts that densification of cities means. Thus increases the will and ambition in city planning in to preserve greenery. This is an interdisciplinary thesis within the subject of geography that studies Biotope Area Factor (BAF), a planning tool that is used in city planning with the purpose of compensating for lost ecological services associated with new housing estate. The thesis aims, with remote sensing and field studies as methods, to investigate whether it is possible to turn focus from using BAF as a planning tool when building new habitations and instead to use it as an analysis tool in existing habitation. To answer the purpose in the study, measurements have been performed using remote sensing and field studies on two properties in the city of Gothenburg. As a starting point when doing the measurements a finished model of BAF, Grönnytta, that was originally used in planning a new neighborhood in Gothenburg called Östra Kvillebäcken was used.At first we performed measurement digitally of the properties? surface through analysis of orthophotos and photos from street view and we also performed measurements through field studies. The digital measurements are performed using ArcMap, where the different surface data is compiled in shapes of polygons and is reported in maps, in tables and in diagrams. The results show that there are differences in values in different methods that have been explored in the study. There are deficiencies in all steps of the used methods, but a trend which becomes clear during the work progress is that for every step of the method the more the precision is increasing. It?s clear that it?s better suited using remote sensing in measuring quantitative properties on the ground rather than the qualitative properties that BAF largely is intended for. When it comes to measurements in existing habitation BAF is applicable, even if we consider some adjustments to be necessary. Against this background we recommend that the models of BAF is adjusteded more to quantitative measurements through remote sensing and also that they are more adjusted to existing habitation as it?s hard in retrospect to compensate for lost ecological services.
