Does a person´s self esteem contribute in the process of creating false memories? Previous studies show that mood is related to false memories as well as to self esteem. This led to the focus of this study, to examine the relationship between false memory and self esteem. The question is examined by comparing the amount of false memories produced in the Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) procedure with people´s scores on Rosenberg´s self-esteem scale. 59 people participated in a test with three different elements, a self esteem test and a memory test with both recollection and free recall. The results show that people with lower scores on the self esteem scale creates more false memories in free recall than people with higher scores. The results were explained by the hypothesis that people with low self esteem tend to attribute their negative feelings on their present task. Meaning they will keep trying to recall words for a longer time period than people with higher self esteem, thus tending to problemize the source of recognition of the memory.
