Aim The purpose of this research is to study the need and the importance of marks in secondary school. The reason is to find out the students' perception of how they are motivated. Furthermore, how students experience the assessment and grading in physical education. What attitudes do students have towards the mark in the subject physical education in 6th and 9th grade, also how does SOC affect their attitudes towards marks? What kind of motivational significance do marks in physical education have in 6th and 9th grade based on their SOC?How do the students experience the assessment in grading in 6th and 9th grade based on their SOC?Method The data was collected with a quantitative approach. The sample consisted of four classes from 6th grade and five classes from 9th grade; all from two different schools in the county of Stockholm. In the implementation a total of 252 surveys were handed out. A pilot study was made with one class from one of the schools. The result has been interpreted by the theoretical perspective SOC (Sense of Coherence).ResultsStudents generally have a positive attitude towards grades in physical education and they think it is important. The mean value of SOC in 6th grade is higher than 9th grade regardless of school. Students categorised in the high SOC value have a more positive attitude than students in the low SOC value category. The mark has a motivational significance and makes students work harder on the lesson. Students feel that they have a good understanding of how the scores are set, regardless of school, gender, grade and SOC. The assessment has a stressful impact on the students regardless of school, grade, gender and SOC-rating. The Schools? geographic location matters.        ConclusionThose thoughts about the need of assessment in physical education and students? perception of marks have mainly been answered. Though the study is small and its results cannot be generalized it still agrees to some extent with previous research. Mostly, indications prove that the students' attitudes to the marks are positive. Moreover, there is a need of grades in physical education. Firstly for motivational purposes and secondly because the students themselves think the mark is important, even though it has a certain stressful effect.
